Chapter 571 He Wants Custody of the Child (4)

Jessica gave him a small smile.

Nathan glanced at her with concern before finally leaving.

Left alone in the room, Jessica sat deep in thought, her mind swirling with the plan Nathan had just suggested.

The more she thought about it, the more anxious she felt, yet there was a faint glimmer of hope.

Just then, the door lock clicked, and she instinctively looked towards the entrance. It was James.

In just a few days, he had grown a shadow of stubble on his face, and he looked worn out.

Jessica stared at him, her gaze cold and devoid of warmth.

James walked over with his long strides and said in a low voice, "Jessica, don't look at me like that. It scares me. I'm afraid of losing you, afraid I won't find you again."

Despite his heartfelt words, Jessica's heart was no longer the soft, forgiving one it once was.

She only felt a bitter irony.

Jessica let out a bitter laugh and said, "You have so many bodyguards watching me day and night; you want me to have the baby and then take it away from me. How can you even say these things to me now?"

James frowned deeply and said, "That's because I'm terrified you'll leave me. I'm not just after the baby; I want you to stay because of the baby."

A bitter smile crossed Jessica's lips as she said quietly, "How can I make you understand that we can't go back to how things were?"

James sighed and said, "I asked Nathan earlier. He brought you here that night because you suddenly had stomach pains, right? I was too hasty; I misunderstood you two. I know it's all my fault! But Jessica, can you come home with me? The baby is due in a few months, and he needs his father."

Jessica's expression remained unchanged as she turned her face away and said coldly, "Just go! That house is your home, not mine."

But the next second, he grabbed her shoulder.

He said angrily, "Jessica, tell me, what do you want from me? What do I have to do for you to forgive me?"

"Let me go."

Jessica's eyes were filled with coldness and detachment as she said, "If you still have any feelings for me, let me go. I can't take it anymore."

James's hands trembled as he gritted his teeth and said, "Anything but that."

But Jessica's eyes were filled with despair, devoid of any other emotion.

That look was like a knife, stabbing into James's heart.

He released her, unable to face her sorrowful gaze any longer.

James said in a low voice, "I'm leaving, but I won't let you go. When you change your mind, call me, and I'll come get you."

With that, he walked out of her hospital room with heavy steps.

After he left, Jessica couldn't sleep, tossing and turning in bed.

Late at night, the hospital ward was eerily quiet, with not a sound to be heard.

Then, she heard faint footsteps outside.

Despite the lightness of the steps, she heard them.

And they were getting closer.

Jessica quickly turned on the light, and to her surprise, there was a figure standing at the door. It was Rose.

She was so startled she almost screamed.

Rose was now dressed in a black coat, her face pale as a ghost.
