Chapter 368 He Still Can't Let Her Go (2)

James couldn't wrap his head around Nathan's solution—shelling out two hundred grand to make things right with the patient's family for Jessica.

He hung up, tossed his phone aside, and asked coldly, "How far have you and Nathan gone?"

Jessica was taken aback and frowned. "Why do you always ask such weird questions? He's my teacher, and we just have a normal teacher-student relationship."

James sneered, "Really? Just a simple teacher-student relationship, and he's willing to drop two hundred grand to fix this for you? If Nathan were that generous to all his students, he'd be broke by now!"

Jessica's eyes widened in shock. She hadn't expected Nathan to handle things this way.

Seeing her silence, James assumed she was admitting to something with Nathan.

He got even angrier and snapped, "Jessica, who told me last night that she didn't need money to fix this but needed recognition and trust? So, my money's dirty, but Nathan's is just fine?"

Jessica's mind was spinning. She thought, 'Two hundred grand! Nathan actually spent that much to help me. No wonder the patient's family let me go. But why would he do this? I'm just a student he's known for a short time.'

James's face was tense, and he asked in a low voice, "Why aren't you saying anything? Jessica, do you really think someone would help you for no reason? Think about it, what do you have to offer him?"

Jessica shot back, "Don't use your twisted thoughts to judge decent people! Professor Howard just wanted to help me, and there's nothing shady between us like you think!"

With that, she stood up and quickly left the restaurant.

James immediately followed her.

On the street, he grabbed her arm and said, "Do you believe that yourself? Jessica, would you drop two hundred grand to help someone who doesn't matter to you?"

Jessica suddenly remembered what Nathan had said, the way he looked at her recently, and what Kylie had mentioned.

She felt a wave of panic but refused to believe Nathan was that kind of person.

Jessica firmly said, "James, what you think is your business. Professor Howard spent that money because of me, but he didn't tell me anything, nor would he use it to blackmail or take advantage of me."

James squinted and mocked, "Should I call you naive or just plain dumb? He's already set a trap for you. He doesn't need to force you. But you'll be moved, won't you? You'll willingly fall into the pit he's dug for you!"

Jessica shouted, "Enough! James, what do you want?"

James calmed down and said slowly, "We are divorced, and I have no right to interfere in your life. But we did love each other, and I don't want to see you get hurt."

His softened tone made Jessica's heart ache, and she couldn't stay mad at him.

She thought, 'Yes, he's right; we did love each other. Even now, I still love him deep down. But I have to hold back; otherwise, I'll be stuck in this love forever, unable to move on.'
