Chapter 366 Why Not Just Be with Professor Howard (4)

Cynthia fumed, thinking, 'This is all Jessica's fault. If it weren't for her, I'd be killing it in the department. If I can get back in Nathan's good graces, and he takes me to more surgeries and gives me some research credits, getting a raise would be a breeze. But now, thanks to Jessica, I've pissed off the top dog in cardiothoracic surgery. How am I supposed to survive this?'

Cynthia stormed back to the office, but no one even glanced her way.

Everyone was gathered around Jessica, chatting away.

"Jessica, you really turned things around. Professor Howard is personally mentoring you."

"Yeah, we're so jealous. We all want to work more with Professor Howard."

Hearing all the envious comments, Jessica felt uneasy.

She knew most people were sucking up to her because of Nathan. But all she wanted was to clear her name, not for everyone to stop talking about the medical accident just because of Nathan's influence.

Jessica spent the whole day in the department, trying to keep her emotions in check and focus on her work. But something still felt off.

In the evening, Kylie came to see her.

When she heard the issue was resolved, Kylie said excitedly, "Really? So, I was wrong about Professor Howard from the start. Wow, he really is perfect—handsome, capable, and most importantly, so righteous!"

Jessica shared her worries with Kylie, looking glum.

Kylie tried to comfort her, "You're overthinking it! Everyone gets talked about behind their back. Let them say whatever they want! You're innocent, and besides, Professor Howard has your back. What can they do? They're just jealous!"

Jessica shook her head, "Kylie, you're not in my shoes, so you might think I'm overreacting. But even though Professor Howard has squashed the rumors, he can't control what people think. I don't want my career to be tainted right from the start. Years from now, people might say, 'Don't be fooled by how well Dr. Evans is doing now; she once caused a death!'"

Kylie nodded, starting to understand, and sighed, "Now that you put it that way, I get it. But Jessica, we're new here. We have no connections, no resources, and even the hospital leaders are on her side. What can we do if she won't admit it?"

Jessica said gloomily, "Yeah, we really can't do anything to her."

Kylie checked the time and said, "I'm heading to the study room to review my coursework tonight. You coming?"

"No, I need to go see Grandpa," Jessica said. "I visit him every day now. He still doesn't know that James and I are divorced."

Kylie suddenly thought of something and reminded her, "Since you're divorced, you should be careful not to let James take advantage of you again. If you ask me..."

Kylie laughed suggestively, and Jessica asked, confused, "What are you laughing at?"

Imagining a romantic scenario between teacher and student, Kylie giggled, "I think Professor Howard is pretty great! He's a few years older than you, but isn't James also much older? Age-wise, he's not much different from James; looks-wise, he's on par with James. And more importantly, Professor Howard can help you in your career!"
