Chapter 341 Pretending to Be a Couple (3)

Jessica was a mess, tears streaming down her face. "It's all my fault," she cried. "I promised I'd visit Grandpa, but after the divorce, I never did. Not even a call. If I'd known he was sick sooner, maybe the tumor wouldn't have spread so fast."

James, hurting just as much, tried to comfort her. "The doctor said Grandpa's last tumor was already in a bad spot. If it wasn't for your mom, he wouldn't have made it back then. This kind of tumor comes back a lot, and when it does, there's no stopping it."

They stayed by Gerald's side all night.

At dawn, Gerald finally stirred.

James called the doctor right away.

After checking Gerald, the doctor sighed in relief. "Mr. Kelly's a fighter. He's showing signs of waking up!"

"Really?" James let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. "Your neurosurgery department is top-notch. Do whatever it takes to save my Grandpa."

The doctor shook his head. "Honestly, with Mr. Kelly's condition, more treatment won't help. You should focus on making his last days happy and regret-free. That's also a way to show your love."

James and Jessica felt a chill at the doctor's words but thanked him anyway.

After the doctor left, James, still not ready to give up, said, "If the experts here can't help, we'll find someone abroad. There's gotta be someone who can do something!"

Just then, Gerald's weak voice broke through. "Don't bother. I know my own body."

"Grandpa?" Jessica rushed to his side, squatting down. "You're awake?"

Gerald smiled gently. "Jessica, what have you been up to? Feels like I haven't seen you in ages."

"Grandpa, I'm so sorry," Jessica said, guilt all over her face. "I'll come see you every day from now on."

Gerald chuckled. "Good! I thought that rascal James scared you off again."

"No," Jessica forced a smile. "James has been great. I've just been busy with my internship."

Gerald nodded. "Alright, help me sit up."

James and Jessica quickly helped him up and adjusted the bed so he could lean back comfortably.

Gerald spoke calmly, "I knew about my illness first, and I've made peace with it. Honestly, these past few years have been a blessing, thanks to Jessica's mom for my surgery back then. I'm content. So, no more experts or futile efforts."

"Grandpa! You can't give up," James's eyes were red. "Even if you do, I won't."

Gerald sighed deeply. "Why don't you get it? At my age, I just want to go with dignity, without more suffering. As long as you and Jessica are happy, that's enough for me."

"Enough, don't say any more," James growled, not wanting to hear Gerald's resignation to his fate.

He didn't want to live through each day feeling like he was drifting further and further away from Gerald.
