Chapter 282 I Really Like This Gift

James let out a big sigh. "Alright, alright, I'll spill. Had dinner with the police chief tonight, mostly to chat about your dad's mess."

Jessica's eyes lit up with hope. "So, how'd it go?"

"It's kinda messy. Still trying to smooth things out," he said, trying to keep the stress out of his voice.

She found some comfort in his words, knowing these things take time. She smiled, relieved. "So there's still a chance, right?"

"Absolutely." James pulled her close, wrapping an arm around her. "Don't sweat it. I got this."

Jessica hesitated, then asked carefully, "What about Rose? Did you really send her abroad?"

James's face tightened for a sec, but the dim light hid it. He didn't wanna lie, but Rose was tangled up in John's situation. He couldn't spill everything. "Yeah, she's already gone," he said, keeping his voice steady.

Jessica didn't expect him to keep all his promises. Feeling his warmth and steady breath, she relaxed into his arms. Shifting slightly, her soft lips grazed his Adam's apple.

James felt a fire ignite inside him. His eyes darkened with desire. "Go to sleep, or if you keep moving, I'll have to make love to you right now!"

"Anyway, I'm already yours," Jessica murmured, her eyes sparkling with a hint of mischief.

James's resolve crumbled. He leaned in, capturing her lips in a passionate kiss. She moaned softly, giving in to the moment.

Two hours later, the room was quiet again, the air thick with the remnants of their passion. Jessica's cheeks were flushed as she nestled into James's chest like a content, yet pleasantly surprised kitten.

James chuckled softly, running a hand down her trembling back. "Didn't wanna tire you out so late, but who told you to seduce me in the middle of the night?"

"You're so annoying!" She glared at him playfully, though she knew he wasn't entirely wrong; she had started it.

The next day, as expected, it got way colder. James reminded Jessica to bundle up. After getting dressed, he also put on the scarf Jessica had knitted for him. It wasn't perfect, with its loose threads, but he cherished it, knowing the effort and care she put into it. Her fingers had been pricked countless times while knitting, a testament to her dedication.

Jessica watched him in surprise as he wrapped the scarf around his neck. Remembering how he had tossed it aside the previous night, she pouted. "Give me back the scarf!"

"Didn't you give it to me?" James asked, pretending to be confused before breaking into a smile.

"Who was it last night that said they didn't like wearing these things?" Jessica challenged.

"Hmm? Who said that?" James teased, wrapping his arms around her waist. "You must have heard wrong."

Jessica rolled her eyes but felt a sweetness in her heart.

James leaned down, his lips close to her ear, and whispered, "Thanks, Jessica. I really like this gift."

Jessica's heart fluttered, and she suddenly planted a kiss on his lips before darting out like a startled deer.
