Chapter 159 The Hidden Truth About Rose Is Discovered (1)

"Brooch, huh."

Rose's voice was heavy with disappointment.

James looked up. "You don't like it?"

"I do," Rose forced a smile, tracing the brooch's details. "It must be expensive. You didn't need to spend so much. I just want your heart."

James took a long sip of wine, hiding his embarrassment.

This anniversary felt the most superficial in five years.

He'd forgotten and had his assistant Sean buy the brooch last minute. Rose pinned it to her collar, trying to hide her true feelings. "Does it look good?" she asked, trying to sound cheerful.

James glanced up and nodded. "You look good no matter what."

Her heart ached at his casual compliment. The brooch was nice, but she wanted a diamond ring—a proposal, a commitment. James seemed more distant, especially after running into Jessica.

During dinner, James seemed distracted. He broke the silence. "After dinner, I'll have the driver take you home. I need to go to the office. There's a lot to handle."

Rose's heart sank. She tried to sound upbeat. "Can I come with you? I love watching you work. You're so focused and handsome."

It was their anniversary; she didn't want to spend it apart. Even if it meant going to the office, she wanted to be with him.

James was surprised but agreed. After lunch, they went to the Kelly Corporation.

She linked arms with James, looking every bit the proper wife, and accepted the employees' greetings with pride.

Rose thought, 'This feels great! If I marry James, I'll be respected everywhere.'

James's office was large, with a resting area. He said, "You can wait here. If you're tired, take a nap."

Rose smiled and kissed his cheek. "Okay, I'll wait. Don't work too hard."

"Alright," James nodded and buried himself in documents.

Then his phone rang. It was Willie, who had treated Rose.

"Hello, Dr. Willie," James answered. "I've been meaning to discuss Rose's condition."

Willie asked, "Is Miss Morris feeling better or worse?"

"I think it's worse. Maybe because we stopped treatment," James said seriously. He glanced at the resting area's closed door and lowered his voice. "She's been having suicidal thoughts."

Willie paused. "Does she feel better when she's with you? She also doesn't seem like a depression patient."

James thought and replied, "Yes, she's talkative and enthusiastic with me. But when she's alone, it gets worse. Yesterday, she almost took a bottle of sleeping pills."

Willie said seriously, "We might have misjudged her condition. It's different from typical depression cases. Although she shows severe depression, her reactions suggest something else."

James was startled. "Can you explain? I don't understand."
