Chapter 133 Car Accident (4)
Seeing how Mary kept her room so clean and cozy, Jessica vowed she couldn't let Mary lie in the hospital without knowing why.
Just then, the phone on the pillow buzzed.
Jessica saw it was James calling and quickly picked up.
His deep, gentle voice came through, "Olivia said you haven't come back yet. She asked me to check on you. Where are you?"
Jessica sighed, "Oh, I forgot to tell Olivia. Something came up at home, and I'm staying here for a few days. It happened so suddenly that I forgot to mention I wouldn't be back tonight."
James sounded concerned. "Something happened at home? What is it? Are you okay?"
Hearing his concern warmed Jessica's heart.
She didn't know where to start; she had so many guesses, none of them clear.
She downplayed it, "It's not about me. It's someone who used to take care of me. She got into a car accident and is in critical condition. I'm afraid my dad can't handle it alone, so I need to go home for a bit to help out."
James was relieved it wasn't Jessica in trouble and joked, "You used to be terrified of staying at home. Now, you don't seem to care at all and are so justified."
Jessica could tell he wasn't genuinely angry, so she boldly retorted, "I used to be a bit afraid of you, but now I see you're actually quite reasonable. Plus, you're not in Ocean City. Aren't you worried about me living alone in such a big house?"
James chuckled, sending a pleasant shiver through Jessica, and he affectionately said, "Leaving such a gorgeous wife at home does make me a bit worried, afraid someone might take an interest."
Even though she knew he was joking, she couldn't help but blush. Jessica realized it seemed to be the first time she had chatted so casually with James on the phone.
Her heart beat faster, and she cautiously asked, "How long will you be abroad this time?"
James thought of Rose's treatment plan and said, "This time, it will be a bit longer."
"Is the company's business that complicated?" Jessica muttered softly and, thinking of her birthday, asked, "Will you be back next Sunday?"
James paused and said in a deep voice, "I'll try my best."
"Okay." Jessica smiled, looking forward to the surprise he was preparing.
Actually, as long as he came back to spend her birthday with her, it would already be a surprise.
In that moment, she felt like a lovestruck teenager, holding onto the phone and unwilling to let go. Just hearing his breathing on the other end of the line brought her a profound sense of comfort and peace.
James gently reminded, "While I'm away, be good. Don't keep anything from me. Call me if anything happens, okay?"
"Okay." Jessica suddenly asked playfully, "What if our time zones are different, and it's the middle of the night for you?"
James laughed and responded, "Just call. I'll answer whenever I hear it."
Jessica felt warm inside. She turned over in bed and lazily said, "I'm a bit sleepy."
James responded with a soft "Hmm" and said, "I have a meeting to attend in a bit. You go to sleep."
Jessica was about to hang up when his voice suddenly came through again, "Jessica."
"What's up?" Jessica asked, confused, waiting for his next words.
James was silent for a moment, then, in a deep, alluring voice, asked, "Do you miss me?"
