The next day.
When Jessica showed up at the Cardiology Department, Cynthia was floored.
Cynthia shot her a look and snapped, "You! Why are you back? You messed up big time, and you still have the nerve to come back? Didn't the school tell you about your punishment?"
Right then, Nathan walked in and said calmly, "I asked her to come back."
He said it like it was the most normal thing in the world, like Jessica being there was no big deal.
Cynthia, ignoring the pecking order, shot back, "Mr. Howard, you must've forgotten that the school and the department heads already punished Jessica. She's not supposed to be here, let alone interning!"
Nathan's eyes got a bit colder as he replied, "I'll go talk to the leadership. This is their problem to deal with. Ms. Wells, you should focus on your patients and make sure this doesn't happen again. Not every time will someone cover for you."
Nathan was usually smooth with his words, never making things hard for others in front of everyone. But this time, he didn't hold back in front of all the doctors and interns.
Cynthia felt totally humiliated. But she couldn't let anyone see her sweat, so she forced a smile and said, "Well, Mr. Howard, you're the boss, so whatever you say goes. Whoever you want to protect is out of our hands."
Nathan didn't get mad. He just gave a cold smile and said, "Ms. Wells, glad you get it. In the future, don't question my decisions. You're not in a position to do so."
Everyone in the department saw Cynthia's embarrassment, but no one stepped up to defend her.
After the morning meeting, Nathan called Jessica into his office.
Nathan said calmly, "Don't let Cynthia's words get to you. Just stick to the routine and do your job well."
Jessica, still feeling down, said, "Professor Howard, it took a lot of guts for me to come here today. I can feel everyone doubting me. I'm scared I'll mess up again and cause more trouble."
Nathan looked at her firmly and said, "I believe you won't let me down. The best way to prove yourself is to do every task well and shut up those who doubt you. I know you can do it."
Jessica, feeling grateful, said, "Thank you, Professor Howard. Whether you can convince the director to let me stay or not, I'll never forget what you've done for me and what you've taught me."
She felt that what Nathan had taught her was more valuable than any professional knowledge or skills.
Nathan smiled, satisfied, and said, "Don't worry. Everything will be fine. Just focus on your work and don't overthink."
With that, Nathan headed to the hospital director's office.
As soon as he walked in, the director started laying into him.
The director said, "Mr. Howard! Have you lost your mind? Both the school and the hospital decided to punish that intern, but you brought her back! Do you know what will happen if the patient's family find out we went back on our word?"
