Chapter 330 I Won't Marry You (2)
James stayed quiet for what felt like forever, probably trying to figure out if she was telling the truth. Finally, he spoke up, calm as ever, "Whether you did or didn't, it doesn't matter now. Even if you did, I get it. Your legs ended up like this because of John. Forgiving him is already a big deal."
Rose, feeling touched, said, "James, I didn't expect that you would understand."
James nodded. "I get it. I'll take care of you and the baby. But Rose, I'm not gonna marry you."
Those last words hit Rose like a ton of bricks, making her head spin. How could he say that? What was the point of all her effort and sacrifice?
With tears in her eyes, she asked, "So, you divorced Jessica just to save her dad? Are you two planning to get back together? Are you setting me up?"
James looked at Rose, confused, not expecting her to jump to conclusions. With a cold look, he said slowly, "I'm not that kind of person, and neither is Jessica. Once we're divorced, it's done. I'm not getting back with her."
Rose finally let out a sigh of relief but didn't dare push further, afraid James would start to dislike her. She believed that as long as Jessica was out of the picture, James would come back to her eventually. His current resistance was just leftover feelings for Jessica.
Rose smirked to herself, 'I've got plenty of time, and I'm determined to wait until James changes his mind.'
In no time, more than a month had passed. Jessica had gone back to the Evans family and hadn't returned to the villa with James. It was like James had never been a part of her life. During the day, her busy intern life kept her distracted. But at night, memories hit her like a tidal wave.
Cynthia's scolding voice snapped her back to reality. "Jessica! What are you daydreaming about again? Did you do the EKG for the surgery patient?"
Jessica calmly handed her the EKG report. "It's done."
Cynthia, unable to find any fault, grumbled, "Last night, those patients on the night shift were uncomfortable. You couldn't even handle such a small thing and had to wake me up. Don't you know I have surgery with Professor Howard today? If I'm not in good shape and the surgery gets delayed, can you take responsibility?"
Jessica was speechless; Cynthia had become more unreasonable lately. During the night shift, the patients' issues were serious, yet she left them all to her, an intern, without even checking. Jessica was worried she might not handle it properly and asked her to take a look, which made Cynthia mad for being woken up.
