Chapter 393 Taking Her as a Student (3)
Jessica was a bit surprised. Although these two patients didn't require urgent surgery, Nathan had never changed the surgery schedule at the last minute before.
Seeing her standing still, Nathan explained, "I'm not feeling well today. I'm afraid something might go wrong during the surgery."
As he said this, he looked at Jessica's dark circles and said, "You didn't rest well either, did you?"
Jessica didn't know what to say.
Last night was the most peaceful night since she started her shifts, but she couldn't fall asleep.
As a result, her eyes were now surrounded by dark circles, making her look very tired.
Nathan seemed to notice something and said to her, "After we finish rounds, you should go rest too. But I hope you can distinguish between work and personal life. Don't bring your issues to work, understand?"
This was not only a hint to Jessica but also a reminder to himself.
Changing the surgery schedule at the last minute was something he had never done before.
The old Nathan was a highly disciplined person.
So now, he somewhat disliked this version of himself.
Jessica nodded self-reproachfully and said, "Thank you for the reminder, Professor Howard. Last night, I interrupted your rest. I won't do it again."
Given James's temper, he wouldn't come to the cardiothoracic department to find her again.
This was good; her heart wouldn't be so restless, always holding onto a faint hope.
At that moment, she suddenly felt a wave of nausea and almost gagged.
Seeing her frown, Nathan quickly asked, "What's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"
Jessica shook her head and said, "Maybe I didn't rest well last night. My stomach feels a bit uncomfortable."
After a while, people in the department started coming in for their shifts.
Many interns were asking their mentors for leave because the school was organizing a mock MCAT exam next week.
Those who wanted to apply for graduate school would naturally take this exam seriously.
Jessica was startled. So many things had happened recently that she almost forgot about the mock exam next week.
Nathan also heard many people discussing applying for graduate school and asked Jessica, "Are you planning to apply for graduate school too? Have you decided which department to apply to?"
Jessica honestly said, "I'm very interested in cardiothoracic surgery, but I heard that the department recruits very few people each year, and the scores are very high."
Nathan smiled and asked, "Do you have a preferred mentor?"
Jessica said self-deprecatingly, "Do I have the right to choose? I'd be grateful if a mentor didn't reject me. How could I possibly pick and choose?"
"Well, then apply to be my graduate student," Nathan said, "As long as you get accepted, I can take you under my wing."
Jessica looked at him in shock.
So many people wanted to join Nathan's team.
But he had directly given her the green light.
Realizing Jessica's surprise, Nathan awkwardly explained, "The gender ratio in my team is severely imbalanced, and the boys are complaining. Bringing in a junior female colleague would be nice."
Jessica thought that if she could follow Nathan in the future, she would undoubtedly learn a lot, not only academically but also in writing, which would be better than with other mentors.
She gratefully agreed immediately, "Professor Howard, I will prepare well."
