Chapter 231 He Comes to Bring Her Some Snacks

James stared at her in shock. "Think it through. The kid will be born without a dad. That's not fair."

"He has a dad!" Rose said sadly. "His dad just won't acknowledge him."

James rubbed his temples, feeling guilty. He knew he had wronged Rose, especially with this child. But if she had the baby, could he just ignore it?

Rose hugged him from behind, pressing intimately against his back. Her voice trembling. "James, promise me you won't be cruel. Give us a home, okay?"

Her tears startled him. Memories of their past love flooded his mind. He used to want to give her everything. Now, she was heartbroken because of him. None of his promises had been kept.

Finally, he softened. He turned around, wiped her tears, and said, "I'm sorry. This is all too sudden. I need time to think."

Rose smiled through her tears, leaning into him. "I knew you wouldn't be heartless. You're just lost. The baby and I will wait for you."

James's expression grew more serious. He nodded. "You should rest."

After he left, Rose's gaze darkened. She angrily swept everything off the table and cried out, "Why? Even though I'm pregnant, James still won't make me Mrs. Kelly. What spell does Jessica have on him?"

James drove to the hospital where Jessica was interning. After asking around, he found her duty room.

As he reached the door, he heard a harsh voice inside, scolding Jessica.

"I've taught many students, but none as stupid as you!" Cynthia snapped. "Observe your peers—they handle patients solo, never bothering their mentor at night. But you? How many times have you called me tonight? My sleep is terrible, and you're making it worse!"

Jessica's shoulders slumped. "Ms. Wells, it's my first day. I'm not familiar with the patients yet. I'll work hard to learn."

"Don't give me excuses!" Cynthia's scolding intensified. "If you keep calling me, I'll fail you!"

Jessica felt hurt and angry. It was her first day. Of course, she didn't know everything. That's why she had a mentor. But Cynthia's harshness made her afraid to fight back.

Just then, a deep voice cut through the tension. "Jessica."

Jessica turned, surprised to see James. "What are you doing here?"

"I brought you some snacks," he said gently.

"How's the night shift?" James asked, placing her favorite snacks and a milk tea on the table.
