Pearl pointed at her, face twisted with anger. "It's you, you awful woman! You killed Dad! How can you even stand here?"
Joan, looking heartbroken, pulled Pearl aside. "Pearl, stop it. The priests are praying for John. Don't interrupt them."
Jessica stared at the mother and daughter in disbelief. "When did you come back?"
"Why do you care?" Pearl shot back, glaring. "Grandma asked us to stay. Dad was fooled by you, and that's why we were sent away. What? You wish we never came back?"
Jessica found their sudden appearance too suspicious. Pearl and Joan were like venomous snakes, only using Louisa without any real affection.
Turning to Louisa, Jessica said, "I know you don't like me, but I have to say this. Dad's gone, and I think he’d want you to live peacefully. If you keep these two around, the Evans family will never have peace. Remember why Dad sent them away? Faking a miscarriage to frame someone isn't a small thing. They’re truly malicious!"
Jessica hoped Louisa would understand, even a little.
But Louisa just sneered darkly, "You cursed your father to death, and now you want to take away my only real granddaughter? Jessica, you are truly vicious!"
Jessica was stunned. Louisa had said it again.
What did she mean by "only real granddaughter"?
Even though Louisa had previously claimed she wasn't a child of the Evans family, Jessica had always thought it was just anger talking.
After all, Louisa never liked her, and losing John was a heavy blow.
But now, the unease and confusion in Jessica's heart were growing stronger.
Jessica looked deeply at Louisa. "What do you mean by that? Pearl is your granddaughter, and so am I! I would never harm you!"
"You?" Louisa scoffed, dripping with disdain. "I've tolerated you for over twenty years, all for your father's sake. Now, your father is dead because of you, a woman with unknown parentage! So let me tell you today, you are not a child of the Evans family, and you are not your father's and mother's biological daughter!"
Jessica stood there, mind blank.
Even though she wanted to believe Louisa was just speaking out of anger, it was hard to deceive herself when she saw the hatred in Louisa's eyes.
Finally, she steeled herself and asked, "Then tell me, what is my true background? Whose child am I?"
Louisa let out a cold laugh, her voice filled with spite. "I won't tell you. I want you to live in pain for the rest of your life. Because of you, the Evans family has never had peace! This is your retribution. You will never know who your real parents are!"
Louisa's words struck Jessica like thunder, leaving her dizzy and disoriented.
Pearl added fuel to the fire. "No wonder you always looked down on me and wanted me out of the Evans family. Turns out, you're not my real sister at all!"
But Jessica no longer cared about the mocking words.
