Chapter 81 James Wants to Try to Accept This Marriage

He should've just stayed quiet. After he spoke, Jessica felt even worse. She couldn't even imagine how heart-wrenching it would be if James, whom she'd silently loved for years, left her life.

Holding back tears, she snapped, "I don't need your help. I can find someone better on my own. You're not my dad. What right do you have to meddle in my choice of spouse?"

James's face darkened. He thought, 'Yeah, after the divorce, what role will I play in Jessica's life? Just an ex-husband!'

But the thought of another man being with Jessica made his heart ache.

He gripped the steering wheel tighter and suddenly asked, "Do you regret marrying me? If you hadn't, you'd still be like those carefree girls on campus."

Jessica didn't expect proud James to say that. Her heart was in turmoil, and her eyes shone in the night.

"I've never regretted it," she said in a soft voice yet strangely resolute.

James seemed surprised by her answer.

Losing his composure, he suddenly said, "Give me some time. I'll try to accept this marriage."

Jessica was taken aback, her heart racing. 'Could it be? Does James mean our marriage still has a chance?' she thought.

Just then, James's phone rang. He answered, and Sean's voice came through. "Mr. Kelly, we found out this medication is for severe depression! The doctor said people using it are usually in the late stages, which is very dangerous."

Hearing this, James suddenly slammed on the brakes, and Jessica's head hit the seat hard.

She was about to complain but heard James coldly command, "Get out of the car."

Jessica looked at him blankly. She pondered, 'Who was that call from? Why was he suddenly so cold?'

James repeated in a deep voice, "Jessica, I told you to get out!"

On a pitch-black night, he kicked Jessica out of the car and drove away, leaving a cloud of dust.

Jessica looked up at the starless sky, her lips curling bitterly. When he answered the phone, she thought she heard the name 'Rose.'

But why? He went to the Mexican restaurant to make her happy tonight, even if it made him allergic, and he just said he'd try to accept their marriage.

And now? How long had it been, and that dream was shattered? Even though summer wasn't over, Jessica's heart felt like it was soaked in an icy pond, cold to the bone.

James sped to Rose's house. He rushed in to find Rose holding a fruit knife, moving it over her wrist.

He grabbed the knife from her and asked anxiously, "Rose! What are you doing?"

Rose quickly forced a smile and replied, "James, why are you here? Don't be nervous. I was just trying to peel an apple."

James's heart filled with regret. He hugged her tightly and repeatedly asked, "You don't have to hide it from me anymore. I know everything. Why did you keep it to yourself when you got sick? Why didn't you tell me? The medication you left in my car is for treating depression, isn't it?"
