Chapter 245 High Surgical Risk (1)
Kylie's voice crackled over the phone, barely containing her excitement. "Where are you? Get over here. It's so satisfying to see this woman get what she deserves! Hurry before the surgery starts."
Jessica initially resisted attending, but Kylie insisted she needed to experience it to heal her internal conflict, or else it would fester unresolved.
So Jessica came. James was waiting at the entrance of the obstetrics and gynecology ward.
As she approached, James didn't seem surprised. It was like he had expected this. He had chosen this hospital, knowing Kylie was interning here, and would inform Jessica.
"You're here," James said with a strained smile. "Seeing it with your own eyes will put your mind at ease."
Jessica froze, emotions overwhelming her. One night had seen James visibly thinner, his eyes red and weary. She wondered if he resented her for making him choose this path.
Lowering her gaze, Jessica got lost in her thoughts. Sensing her hesitation, James asked calmly, "What's wrong?"
"I'm afraid you'll hate me, blame me," she whispered, her voice trembling. She looked up at him with clear, hurting eyes. "If you can't bear to let her go, you can still change your mind before the surgery starts."
James let out a humorless chuckle. "If this is a sin, I'll accept it. There's no turning back now."
"Thank you," Jessica whispered, her eyes sparkling with tiny lights.
James was puzzled. "Thank me for what?"
Jessica choked up, emotion thick in her throat. "Thank you for choosing me."
"Fool," he muttered, ruffling her hair with a hint of affection in his eyes.
Just then, the doctor came out of the operating room, looking serious.
James's heart skipped a beat. "Is there a problem with the surgery?"
The doctor asked, "Are you the patient's husband?"
James hesitated, glanced at Jessica, and awkwardly said, "No. But you can tell me."
The doctor spoke gravely, "The patient's uterine wall is very thin. If we proceed with the curettage, there's a high risk of perforation or heavy bleeding. It could also result in future infertility. If you want to continue, please sign this consent form."
James was surprised by the severe consequences and owed Rose already. If this surgery caused her to be unable to have children, how could he ever make it up to her?
Just then, Rose came out of the operating room, looking frail.
She said softly, "Doctor, I told you, I'm the mother of the child. I have the right to decide. Just do it."
The doctor advised, "Are you sure? The impact on your future is significant. Think it over."
"No need," Rose said, looking at James with a sorrowful smile. "I've only ever loved one man, but I can't be with him. I won't need children in the future."
The doctor sighed. "Alright then, come in. Sign the risk disclosure form yourself, so you can't say we didn't inform you."
