Chapter 389 Sharing a Room with Professor Howard (3)
Nathan had already made his point clear, and Jessica felt that if she refused again, it would seem a bit ungrateful.
She bit her lip and said shyly, "I've already taken over your on-call room, and if I make you sleep in mine, it would be like taking over your place. I've always trusted your character, so I'll accept."
With that, Jessica took her pillow and went to Nathan's on-call room.
She didn't make Nathan sleep in the intern's on-call room.
After all, there were four beds in his room, and they were bunk beds, so there was plenty of space. If she insisted on making Nathan sleep elsewhere, it would seem too fussy.
So, Jessica chose the lower bunk closest to the door.
Nathan was taken aback and asked, "Why are you sleeping here? It's so close to the door, won't the noise from the hallway bother you?"
Jessica smiled and said, "Being close to the door makes it easier to get up and attend to patients quickly."
Nathan suddenly understood and then smiled, saying, "Cynthia left quite an impression on you. But now, you're on duty with me, so just sleep. I'll get up to handle the patients at night."
Jessica was surprised and said, "You get up to handle the patients?"
"What else? Isn't that what being on call as a doctor is about? I used to do it all the time."
Nathan found her reaction adorable and explained, "It's just that now we have too many interns at our hospital, which has made some doctors lazy. Cynthia's incident serves as a reminder. When it comes to matters of life and death, it's best to handle things personally."
Jessica still felt uncomfortable letting a professor do the work of a junior doctor. She said, "You can learn a lot during night shifts. If a patient needs something at night, I can check first and then report to you."
"You have plenty of time to learn during the day. Girls need more sleep; it's good for the skin, isn't it?"
Nathan smiled gently and reassured her, "Alright, you don't need to be polite with me or feel embarrassed. Once you become a full-fledged doctor, you'll have plenty of shifts to cover."
So, Nathan slept in the bed closest to the door, while Jessica chose the bed farthest from him.
Otherwise, she would still feel awkward.
Not long after lying down, Jessica's phone rang. It was a call from James.
She was slightly surprised. Why would he call her at this time?
Wasn't he celebrating his birthday?
With a sense of curiosity, Jessica answered the call quietly.
"Hello, what's up?" she whispered, afraid of disturbing Nathan's rest.
James's voice came from the other end, "Jessica, where are you? I'm at the door of your on-call room, and there's no one inside."
