Chapter 232 I Really Want to Take You Home and Pamper You
Jessica forced a smile and said softly, "I'm fine."
Cynthia was stunned, unable to hide her surprise. A handsome guy like that showing up during her shift was totally unexpected. Plus, he had this dignified vibe, definitely not an average Joe. But Jessica? She seemed so plain. How did she know someone like him?
"Jessica, aren't you going to introduce me? This is...?" Cynthia's eyes were glued to James, curiosity mixed with eager anticipation. At over thirty and still single, she wasn't about to miss this chance.
Before James could answer, Jessica quickly cut in. "Ms. Wells, this is my brother," she said, a bit too briskly.
James's face darkened, but she continued. "James, this is Ms. Wells, my supervising nurse."
Cynthia's demeanor shifted instantly. She smoothed her hair and adjusted her posture, putting on a warm facade. "Jessica's brother," she said sweetly, "you are so good to her! The bond between you two is really enviable."
Ignoring her, James focused on Jessica. "Come out with me for a moment," he said firmly.
Jessica hesitated, glancing nervously at Cynthia. The whole day had been rough under her supervision, and she feared what might happen if she stepped out.
But Cynthia quickly recalibrated. Smiling in what she probably thought was a charming way, she said, "It's fine. I'll manage here. You two go have a chat."
James didn't spare her a glance and pulled Jessica out of the duty room.
In the stairwell, James let her go.
He looked at her deeply and asked, "Why didn't you tell her I was your husband? Before, when I said I was your brother, didn't you say you didn't need a brother?"
Jessica found his angry expression oddly cute. She chuckled, her eyes sparkling.
James suddenly wrapped his arm around her waist and asked in a low voice, "What's so funny? You haven't answered my question."
Jessica wrapped her arms around his neck and softly explained, "I just started my internship. If people find out I'm married, and my husband is the famous Mr. Kelly of the Kelly Corporation, I'll become the center of attention. There will definitely be a lot of rumors."
James knew Jessica was low-key and reserved, and he didn't want to push her. Thinking about how Cynthia had scolded her earlier, his tone turned icy. "What's the deal with that mentor of yours? I can help you switch to a new one if you want!"
Jessica knew James stood up for her with blunt honesty. But it was her first day, and she didn't want to make enemies. She gave him a faint smile and said, "I know you're looking out for me. But I came here to learn. And you know what they say, a strict teacher can produce excellent students."
James's expression softened slightly, though skepticism lingered. "Are you sure it's okay?" he asked gently. "Don't take what she said to heart. No one knows everything from the start; otherwise, why would we need teachers?"
Jessica felt warmth spread through her chest and stood on tiptoe to kiss him tenderly. She smiled up at him, her eyes reflecting gratitude. "Honey, thank you for coming to see me tonight. Honestly, I was really nervous about my first night shift. But now, I'm not scared anymore."
James felt pleased by her calling him that. He lowered his head, his voice turning low and teasing. "Say it again."
Jessica was slightly taken aback, her cheeks flushing as she shyly complied, "Honey."
"Good girl," James murmured, his eyes darkening with desire. "I really want to take you home and pamper you."
He held her close, his grip firm but tender, as if he wanted to meld her into his very being.
