Chapter 157 An Awkward Encounter
Jessica remarked self-deprecatingly. "Maybe we were just too idealistic. He never remembers my birthday. It's always been like this."
Lily comforted her. "But if he wasn't planning something, why ask if you liked that necklace?"
Jessica fell silent, knowing it was unlikely. Then Lily added sharply, "What if that woman is trying to ruin your relationship? Anyway, Let's see what he does tomorrow."
Despite Lily's efforts, Jessica didn't have much hope. She knew James wasn't coming back, but to keep Lily from worrying, she faked a yawn and said, "I'm really tired. I think I'll go to bed early."
The next morning, Lily came in with a big smile, holding a beautifully wrapped gift. "Surprise!" she exclaimed.
She placed a high-end handbag on Jessica's lap. "Do you like it?" she asked, eyes twinkling.
Jessica's heart warmed and smiled. "I love it, Lily. Thank you."
Lily beamed. "Happy birthday, Jessica. I hope you can always be happy."
Jessica hugged Lily tightly. "You're the best," she whispered.
Determined to enjoy her birthday, Jessica pushed aside her disappointments. She deserved to be happy, even if just for a moment.
Lily cautiously asked, "James still hasn't come back? Does he even know it's your birthday? We should have reminded him."
"He probably doesn't know. It's like this every year." Jessica forced a smile and changed the subject, "Let's not talk about him. Let's go shopping and have a big meal. Just forget about James."
Lily knew Jessica's carefree attitude was a facade. She sighed inwardly, 'I shouldn't have given Jessica so much hope about James.'
To distract her, Lily took Jessica shopping.
Though they visited many stores, Jessica wasn't interested and didn't buy anything.
Lily, getting tired, suggested, "It's almost noon. There's a new seven-star restaurant at Golden Plaza. Let's try it."
"Okay," Jessica responded faintly, and they headed to the restaurant.
Since it was Sunday, the place was crowded.
"There are too many people, and we didn't make a reservation. We might have to wait long," Jessica sighed. "Why don't we go somewhere else?"
Lily persuaded, "What's the big deal? We have all day."
As they chatted, a familiar voice cut through their conversation.
"James, you booked the window seat with the full view of Ocean City! You know me so well!" Rose's sweet tone echoed painfully in Jessica's ears.
Jessica froze, heart pounding as she saw James holding Rose's hand. The restaurant manager approached them, all smiles. "Mr. Kelly, it's an honor to have you here! Your table is ready. Please, come this way."
A sharp pain clawed at Jessica's chest, locking her legs in place. She stood still, watching as James and Rose were led inside, unaware of her presence.
Lily's unbearable, she rushed forward to confront them. Jessica's paralysis broke, but it was too late to stop her. Lily was already confronting them.
