Chapter 120 He Stayed Home with Her But Lied to Rose
Lily asked, confused, "What's going on? If you're being bullied, just say it."
Jessica whispered into the phone, "Really, nothing's wrong. He didn't bully me."
Lily sensed it might be hard for her to talk but felt reassured by her tone. "Alright, we'll chat more tomorrow!"
After Jessica hung up, James looked at her with a gloomy expression.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Jessica asked suspiciously.
James squinted. "How much bad stuff did you tell your friend about me? She's so wary of me."
Jessica didn't respond. She hadn't badmouthed him, just told the truth. She quietly complained, "You do bully me all the time."
James laughed in exasperation. "How do I bully you? Do I hit you? Curse at you? Not feed you?"
Jessica replied, "Compared to domestic abusers, you're definitely better. At least you're somewhat civilized."
James's face changed. So, in her mind, his only merit was being somewhat civilized.
That night, James stayed home. When he went to shower, a message popped up on Facebook.
Jessica saw the name 'Rose' and curiosity drove her to open his Facebook.
Rose: [James, be safe on your business trip tonight. I'll be waiting for you.] She even added a heart emoji.
Jessica looked at the closed bathroom door, her heart sinking. So, James had lied to Rose about a business trip.
Why? He stayed home with her but lied to Rose. Jessica suddenly felt like the third wheel, while Rose seemed like the deceived wife.
She felt incredibly upset. To James, this home was just a temporary hotel, and she was just a dispensable woman.
The sound of water in the bathroom stopped abruptly.
Jessica knew he had finished his shower. She quickly put the phone back and got under the covers, pretending to be asleep.
Otherwise, she feared she wouldn't be able to hide her emotions or might even confront him and drive him away.
James's footsteps got closer, and Jessica didn't even dare to breathe loudly.
James asked softly, "Jessica? Are you asleep?" The dampness from his shower, mixed with a faint fragrance, wafted over her.
Jessica's eyelashes trembled, but she kept her eyes closed, refusing to respond.
Later, she felt the bed sink slightly. James had gotten into bed and was holding her from behind.
Jessica lay tensely in his arms, listening to his strong heartbeat, feeling desolate inside.
She thought painfully, 'In James's heart, Rose is probably his real wife. But why give me hope? Why not just get a divorce?'
It wasn't until she heard James's breathing become slow and even that she opened her red, tear-filled eyes.
Tears silently slid down her cheeks as Jessica quietly moved away from his embrace, curling up at the edge of the bed. James would never truly understand her profound sense of loss and helplessness.
The next day, Lily came to the school to find her right after work.
Now, Lily was very interested in Jessica and James's relationship, almost treating it like a TV drama.
