Chapter 340 Pretending to Be a Couple (2)

Kylie was like, "I'm not like you, always thinking about dating. Right now, I gotta get into grad school first and then find a good hospital."

Jessica shot back, "Alright, you've got big dreams!"

They kept teasing each other while lighting candles and making wishes.

Jessica had a super chill and happy day off.

Later that evening, she dropped Kylie off at home. Kylie kept thanking her so much it made her head spin.

Jessica said, "Alright, remember you're not alone in Ocean City; you've got me! So, stop posting all that depressing stuff on Facebook."

After watching Kylie head into the dorm, Jessica finally made her way home. On the way, her phone rang—it was James.

Jessica hesitated for a second and then hung up.

She couldn't figure out why James was still trying to reach out, but she had already decided to move on. She didn't see any point in staying in touch.

But the phone kept ringing.

Jessica ignored it, and eventually, James gave up.

She let out a sigh of relief and sped up to get home faster.

Just then, her Facebook notification pinged; it was a message from James: [Grandpa is sick. Call back ASAP.]

Jessica's heart started racing.

She pulled over and quickly called James back, her voice shaky, "What's wrong with Grandpa? What's he got?"

James's voice was low and heavy, "It's bad. He's in your hospital, in the neurosurgery department."

"Neurosurgery?" Jessica immediately thought of how Gerald had brain cancer before, and Thalia had successfully operated on him. He had been doing well for years. Could it be a relapse?

James sighed, "He's already in a coma. The doctors say he doesn't have much time left. I thought you should know. If you can, come by tomorrow. It's too late tonight, and I need to stay here with Grandpa, so I can't pick you up."

Jessica didn't hesitate, "Take good care of Grandpa. I'm coming over now."

On the way, memories of Gerald's care and protection since she married into the Kelly Family played in her mind, and tears streamed down her face.

She gripped the steering wheel tightly, muttering to herself, "Grandpa, you'll be okay. You have to be okay."

Twenty minutes later, Jessica arrived at the hospital.

James looked exhausted, his tall frame slightly hunched, leaning against the wall.

Jessica's heart sank, and she rushed over, anxiously asking, "How's Grandpa?"

James's voice was hoarse and tired, "The doctors said Grandpa's tumor has relapsed and spread throughout his body. Surgery won't help. This time, the tumor invaded his nerves, causing the coma."

Jessica's heart felt like it was breaking, and an overwhelming sadness almost drowned her. "I want to see Grandpa."

Holding back her tears, Jessica walked into the ward.

Gerald was covered in tubes, no longer the strong man he once was.

Jessica held Gerald's frail hand, and tears streamed down uncontrollably. "Grandpa..."

But Gerald remained in a coma, unable to respond.

James walked in, standing by Gerald's bedside, and said softly, "It's my fault. I haven't visited Grandpa in so long. It wasn't until he collapsed today that the housekeeper told me. Actually, Grandpa knew his tumor had relapsed a while ago. He didn't want us to worry, so he kept it from us."
