Chapter 49 He's Changed
Jessica's framing had already come to light. If she didn't speak up, James would start getting suspicious.
James gently wiped her tears and said, "I know you're not like your relatives. You're not one to gossip. Rose, I believe you."
Rose seized the moment, "Miss Evans is really something. She even got a famous medical expert to help her. But honestly, with someone as beautiful and capable as Miss Evans, who wouldn't like her?"
A shadow crossed James's eyes.
He thought, 'Yeah, a woman like Jessica—just because I don't appreciate her doesn't mean other men won't. But so what? Whether Jessica gets her freedom is up to me! Until I let go, no one can have my wife!'
Just when Rose thought she had successfully stirred things up, James suddenly said, "About Lily hitting you, you should drop the charges."
Rose looked shocked, her face a bit awkward. "Is this Miss Evans's idea?"
James replied coldly, "It's her idea, and it's mine too. Dragging this out helps no one. Jessica was wronged. After all, she saved your grandmother's life."
Rose clenched her fist under the blanket but kept an innocent look, saying, "James, I know I misunderstood Miss Evans, but it was my aunt and the others who insisted on pursuing this. I tried to talk them out of it. Do you think I'm the kind of person who repays kindness with ingratitude?"
She started to cry again.
James used to feel heartbroken whenever Rose cried. But now, her tears just annoyed him.
James said, "But in the end, it was your Morris family who started this, and Jessica has suffered a lot because of it. So, let's end it here. If you don't drop the charges, Jessica might sue your family for slander and defamation. It will only lead to mutual destruction."
Rose stared at him, confused. Was he thinking of her now, or Jessica?
She said softly, "James, I can't figure you out anymore. You used to care so much about me, trust me, and always stand by my side. But now..."
James interrupted her sternly, "It's still the same. But people need to know right from wrong, don't they? This time, it was your family who wronged Jessica, and I wronged her along with you."
Because he trusted Rose, he almost joined in accusing and misunderstanding Jessica.
And the person who cleared Jessica's name wasn't him, her husband, but another man.
This made James feel like his dignity was shattered!
But Rose unwillingly asked, "So, am I just supposed to take this beating for nothing?"
