Chapter 440 Buying an Engagement Ring (2)
George and Linda exchanged a silent, thoughtful glance.
They had heard that Gerald's will had already been made, and they needed to use the little time left to pressure Gerald into changing it, so that either Jack or George could take the position of president of The Kelly Corporation.
At this moment, Charles came out and said, "Mr. James Kelly, Mrs. Kelly, Mr. Gerald Kelly wants to see you."
George pulled Linda along, wanting to go in as well, afraid that the grandfather and grandson would conspire again.
But Charles stopped them, saying sternly, "Mr. Gerald Kelly specifically instructed that he only wants to see Mr. James Kelly and Mrs. Kelly. No one else."
George had no choice but to stand there, frustrated, while Linda stomped her feet in anger, wishing Gerald would die sooner.
James took Jessica inside. Gerald, with an oxygen tube, looked extremely pale and haggard.
"You're here!"
Gerald smiled kindly and said, "Sit down."
Jessica's tears immediately welled up, and she ran to Gerald's bedside, choking up, "Grandpa, how are you feeling now? I'm sorry, it's all my fault. It's because of our Evans family that things have turned out this way."
Gerald looked at James and asked, "What do you say? Do you regret helping the Evans family?"
James paused slightly but shook his head without hesitation, saying, "No regrets."
"Good! I didn't misjudge you!"
Gerald said approvingly, "The descendants of our Kelly family should have the courage to take responsibility. Jessica is your wife, and whether you are divorced or not, I consider Jessica as part of our Kelly family. When our in-laws are in trouble, how can we not help?"
Jessica felt both touched and guilty as she listened to their conversation.
Gerald sighed slightly and said, "Even though I haven't been to the company personally, I can roughly imagine the shareholders' reactions. What are you planning to do next?"
James said calmly, "Since they want The Kelly Corporation, let them come. If they want my position, let's see if they can hold it."
Gerald was very confident in James. He smiled and nodded, saying, "It seems you already have a plan. Now, I can truly be at ease!"
James half-knelt by Gerald's bed, holding Gerald's aged hand, and promised word by word, "Grandpa, you used to protect me and clear all obstacles for me. Now, it's my turn to protect you. I will safeguard The Kelly Corporation and Jessica."
Gerald's eyes were a bit moist, and he said tremblingly, "Actually, I am really reluctant to leave this world. But seeing you all doing so well, I have no regrets even if I die."
James forced himself to hold back his tears, but his eyes were red.
Jessica turned her face away, not wanting Gerald to see her cry.
She kept telling herself that Gerald was still alive, and if he saw them crying like this, his will to live would only diminish.
Gerald pretended not to see, and with a weary voice, said, "Alright, you can go now. I want to sleep for a while."
James nodded and said, "Okay, Grandpa, we will be right outside. If you need anything, just call us."
After they left the ward, Linda and George were already gone.
Jessica said to him, "From today on, let's stay here with Grandpa. I'll ask Professor Howard for a leave and won't go to my internship for now."
Although they didn't say it explicitly, they both understood that Gerald probably only had a few days left to live.
