Chapter 50 They Won't Have a Future
James dodged Rose's eyes and said, "Jessica got hit too."
Rose didn't like it, but James made his point. If she kept pushing about Jessica and Lily, he'd start suspecting her.
Everyone was backing Jessica now, so Rose decided to play along. She could score some points with James this way.
Putting on a show, she said, "I get it, James. I'll tell the lawyer to drop the lawsuit. Miss Evans had it worse than me. Let's invite her to dinner so I can apologize."
She made sure to look like she was on James's side, playing the perfect hostess.
The next morning, Jessica got a call from Adam. The lawsuit was dropped.
But Adam was out of town and couldn't pick up Lily.
"I'll go get her," Jessica said, jumping out of bed, brushing her teeth, and rushing to the detention center.
Standing at the entrance, she anxiously waited.
Finally, Lily walked out.
Jessica ran over, hugging her tight, "Lily, I'm so sorry it took this long."
She checked Lily for injuries, "No one bullied you, right? You look thinner. Was the food bad?"
Lily laughed, "Relax, Jess. I got in there for fighting. They probably thought I was tough! Who'd mess with me?"
Jessica sighed, "I was worried sick! Come home, shower, and change."
Lily, curious about her release, asked, "How'd you get me out? You didn't make any crazy deals, did you?"
Jessica explained everything, "Professor Howard helped clear things up. Without him, I'd still be in trouble."
Lily finally relaxed, letting out a breath.
They chatted and laughed on the way back to Jessica's place.
Jessica said, "Lily, use my bathroom. I'll make you some juice."
Lily agreed, "Sure, but get me some new pajamas. And James isn't coming back, right?"
Jessica replied, "No, Rose is still in the hospital. She caused a scene yesterday, so James is probably staying with her."
From the bathroom, Lily shouted, "That jerk! Why haven't you divorced him yet? Dump him, and I'll help you find someone better!"
Jessica sighed.
She wanted to move on, knowing there was no future with James.
But every time she tried, it felt like a knife cutting into her heart.
The pain was unbearable, tearing her apart.
