Chapter 270 Just Let Me Hold You for a While
Seeing Jessica's pissed-off face, James just gave her a cold look, not even bothering to explain.
He strolled over to the bedroom sofa, plopped down, took a deep breath, leaned back, and shut his eyes.
However, Jessica couldn't hold it in anymore. She snapped, "James, you think it's funny to mess with me? Do you even know how long I waited for you at the hospital entrance? Do you know how freaking windy it was tonight?"
James's eyes were deep as he calmly said, "Something came up tonight, and I forgot to tell you."
Jessica hadn't expected him to ditch her and leave her hanging in the cold wind for two hours. And now, he was giving her this half-assed excuse.
'So, is all his sweet talk and affection just a passing phase?' Jessica thought to herself. With that, she turned to leave, not wanting to waste another word on him.
But as she turned, James grabbed her wrist and pulled her into his arms.
He still had that faint tobacco smell, but weirdly, it made her feel kinda safe.
"James, let go of me. I wanna go to sleep," she said coldly, struggling awkwardly, but James just held her tighter.
He buried his head in her neck and whispered, "Don't go. Let me hold you for a bit, just a bit. I still gotta head out soon."
After all, Rose was still in the hospital with both legs busted. The doc said even if she could stand again, she'd never dance. For a dancer, that was a total nightmare.
James had come back while Rose was asleep. He was worried about Jessica, so he wanted to check on her.
Now, holding Jessica in his arms, he felt some of his exhaustion lift.
Jessica was confused; this wasn't like James at all. His voice was so tired, so worn out. And he had no reason to break his promise.
Jessica suddenly got worried and asked, "Did something happen? And why do you have to go out so late?"
But James didn't answer and let go of her. His deep eyes held emotions she couldn't read. He reached out and smoothed her hair. "It's nothing, just a lot of work at the company that needs my attention. Alright, you go to sleep. I should get going," he said.
"James." Jessica grabbed his hand, getting more anxious. She pressed, "You're not lying to me, right? I feel like you're hiding something."
James smiled. "Silly girl, aren't you mad at me for breaking my promise?"
Jessica was still mad, but then she said, "If you have a legit reason, I can forgive you. Just tell me the truth!"
The bad feeling grew stronger, and Jessica was sure James was hiding something.
But James stuck to his story and said, "Be good. Once everything's sorted, we'll go on a date, okay?" With that, he walked out the door.
Jessica felt a weird panic. Even though she was super mad at James and didn't see a future with him anymore, she still didn't want him to get into any trouble.
Even if they broke up, she still wanted him to be happy. So she couldn't help but worry about him.
But James wouldn't tell her anything, and she could only worry in vain.
Meanwhile, Louisa was freaking out at the Evans residence.
