Chapter 342 Pretending to Be a Couple (4)
James just stormed off without a word.
Jessica quickly tried to comfort Gerald. "Grandpa, don't be upset. James is just trying to help you get better. That's why he reacted like that."
Gerald smiled at her. "But you know the truth, don't you? I believe you understand me."
Jessica looked down, avoiding his gaze.
Honestly, she admired Gerald's acceptance of life and death, but she couldn't bring herself to smile and say goodbye when the day came.
Her rational side knew that continuing treatment was pointless; it would only make Gerald suffer more. Making him go through radiation and chemo at his age—how was that any different from torture?
So, Jessica nodded firmly. "Grandpa, I understand. From now on, I'll make sure you're happy every day."
"That's my girl. I always knew I didn't misjudge you." Gerald smiled. "Marrying you was the best thing that ever happened to James."
Jessica felt a pang of sadness. Gerald didn't know she and James were already divorced.
Though Gerald had woken up, he was still weak and soon fell asleep again.
Jessica took the chance to find James while Gerald was asleep.
She finally found him sitting on a bench outside the hospital.
Jessica walked over quickly. "Grandpa finally woke up. Are you really going to waste the little time he has left by not being with him?"
"Don't say that!" James's eyes were sharp. "Grandpa will live on, for a long time. I've already asked Sean to find top neurosurgeons internationally. I believe there's a way."
Jessica nodded and quietly said, "I know you're hurting. I feel the same because I've long considered Grandpa as family. But Grandpa wants to go with dignity, without pain."
James leaned back in his chair, staring hopelessly at the sky. "So, you think we should just give up? Just watch Grandpa die?"
Jessica said calmly, "Everyone faces this day. You're trying so hard to treat Grandpa because you don't want any regrets. But shouldn't we respect Grandpa's wishes? He's the one suffering. Do you know how torturous it is for terminal cancer patients to undergo futile treatments?"
Suddenly, James hugged her tightly.
"James," Jessica spoke softly, wanting him to let go.
But James's voice was fragile. "Don't move. Let me hold you for a while, just for a while."
Jessica could feel James trembling.
She completely understood his feelings because she had gone through the same thing when Thalia was on her deathbed. That's why she seemed calmer and more rational in handling this situation compared to James.
After a long while, James let her go, a bitter smile on his lips. "Thank you, Jessica."
Then, as if remembering something, he hesitated. "I haven't told Grandpa about our divorce. In his final days, I don't want him to know. I hope you can act like a loving couple with me. Do you understand?"
