Chapter 112 Dominic's Conspiracy
An elegant restaurant, a romantic private room.
Dominic personally placed the utensils in front of Cecilia, attentive and considerate.
However, one sentence from Cecilia made Dominic freeze in place.
He was visibly embarrassed.
Cecilia didn't give Dominic a chance to speak. She said, "We've been together for so many years, and you didn't know I'm allergic to mushrooms?"
Dominic was stunned for half a second, quickly calming himself down. He hurriedly said, "I just wanted to share something delicious with you and forgot about your mushroom allergy. Waiter, could you please change this to black pepper sauce?"
"Yes, sir." The waiter promptly and respectfully agreed.
Cecilia watched Dominic's clumsy and ridiculous performance with indifference.
In fact, Dominic's act had many flaws. Why didn't she see through it in her previous life?
Was it because she trusted Dominic too much that she ended up being deceived so miserably?
Dominic found some topics to smooth over the awkwardness.
He said, "Cecilia, why did you suddenly start working? I never heard you mention wanting to work before."
Cecilia replied, "Just to pass the time."
"Is it because Alaric treats you poorly and doesn't give you a sense of security?" Dominic looked worried.
"Of course not," Cecilia denied.
"That's good." Dominic smiled nervously. "I was just afraid you were suffering with Alaric. After all, he has a bad reputation, and I worry..."
"Instead of worrying about how Alaric treats me, why don't we talk about us?" Cecilia raised an eyebrow. "Didn't you say you wanted to clear things up?"
"Yes." Dominic nodded quickly.
He was always cautious around Cecilia, not daring to offend her in any way.
He said, "Today, Isadora's funeral made me feel a lot."
Cecilia lowered her head to eat the dinner the waiter had brought back, treating it like a free stand-up comedy show.
"I really didn't expect her to choose suicide because of her disgrace. To be honest, I feel a bit guilty," Dominic said, looking somewhat distressed. "If I had known she couldn't handle the blow, I would have talked to her more."
Cecilia seriously ate her steak without any reaction.
Dominic felt a bit awkward and continued talking to himself, "Actually, Isadora and your uncle really pushed me too far. It was clearly Isadora who drugged and seduced me, but in the end, they made me marry her. I've loved you from the beginning; how could I marry her? I didn't expect my refusal to lead to such retaliation, to her publicly denouncing me! I had no choice but to prove my innocence. Cecilia, you don't blame me, do you?"
As Dominic spoke, he suddenly reached out, trying to hold Cecilia's hand.
Cecilia raised her hand, avoiding his.
She said, "That's between you and Isadora. Why should I blame you? There are reasons for everything. Even if Isadora becomes a ghost, she won't come after me."
Dominic's face changed slightly.
In the past, Cecilia would believe whatever he said, never doubting him.
Now, Cecilia opposed everything he said, as if she had become a different person.
Dominic gritted his teeth, swallowing his emotions, and said, "Cecilia, because of Isadora's death, I'm really worried about you."
Cecilia chuckled lightly.
Her smile was clearly sarcastic.
Dominic continued, "I'm worried you might not be able to handle it. After all, we loved each other so much, and I did such hurtful things to you. I'm afraid you won't be able to move on. If anything happens to you, even if I die a thousand times, it wouldn't be enough to atone!" Dominic said, full of guilt, looking so sincere!
But to Cecilia, his sincerity was utterly disgusting.
She couldn't understand how Dominic could say such nauseating things!
"You don't need to worry about my state. Alaric and I are doing great, and I even thank you and Isadora for what happened, for not letting us get married, and for letting me marry Alaric," Cecilia said bluntly.
"Cecilia, don't pretend. I know you're saying this on purpose. I know you love me. The more you act like this, the more it breaks my heart," Dominic said, looking worried.
"I don't love you," Cecilia said clearly. "When I was young, my grandpa told me we were engaged. At that time, I only knew about you. I thought I loved you. But now, I understand that's not the case. Rather than saying it was love at first sight, it's more accurate to say I loved my grandpa so much that I believed whatever he said. Perhaps any man my grandpa chose, I would have mistakenly thought I loved him."
Dominic listened coldly to Cecilia's words.
His barely contained anger was evident.
He couldn't accept Cecilia saying she didn't love him.
All these years, he believed he had Cecilia wrapped around his finger, feeling an inexplicable superiority over her. He couldn't accept that Cecilia didn't love him, and not only that, but she had also fallen for another man in such a short time!
Dominic clenched his fists tightly.
He was desperately suppressing his anger.
"So, I really am grateful to you, grateful for what happened with you and Isadora, for giving me the courage to break off our engagement, for giving me the courage to marry Alaric, and then I understood what true love is," Cecilia said, her smile clearly sweet and happy.
"As long as you don't have any shadows," Dominic said perfunctorily.
A hint of cruelty flashed in his eyes.
Dominic probably never imagined that the Cecilia who loved him to the point of losing herself would suddenly say she loved another man.
Even tonight, when Dominic invited Cecilia to dinner, he probably thought that a few sweet words would make Cecilia change her mind.
After all, she might have just been angry at the wedding.
Once she calmed down, if he showed weakness, she would come back to him.
Of course, he couldn't accept Cecilia as damaged goods.
He planned to use her and then make her life a living hell!
Because she betrayed him and ruined his reputation!
However, everything was completely off Dominic's expectations. His eyes narrowed.
Dominic suddenly picked up the wine glass beside him, replacing his expression with a warm smile, and said gently, "I thought you needed my comfort and my apology, and even considered that we might get back together. But since you feel your current life is what you want, then I wish you well."
Cecilia glanced at the wine glass beside her.
She picked it up.
Dominic initiated a toast with Cecilia.
At that moment, a sly smile appeared on Dominic's lips.
