Chapter 597 Kidnapping (4) Identity Verification
The whole world seemed to go quiet.
Cecilia's eyes were locked on Alaric, unsure of what he'd do next.
Right then, she just wished he'd give in for her sake.
"One!" Pierce's voice rang out.
But Alaric just stared at them coldly, staying silent and refusing to give in for her.
Tears welled up in Cecilia's eyes.
She didn't blame Alaric, though. Everyone has their own choices, and they had agreed from the start that she would help him have a bright future. But now, she was just in his way.
She had already avenged the deep hatred from her past life.
Should she let go?
Thinking about it, Cecilia closed her eyes a bit.
A tear, like a pearl, slid down her cheek, breaking her heart.
Alaric's body was tense, his Adam's apple bobbing.
Cassius and Augustus didn't dare make a sound, afraid to mess with anyone's judgment.
Pierce sneered, his face twisted with a nasty look, finger on the trigger. That bloodthirsty look was super cruel. The sound of an empty chamber echoed—a gun firing without bullets—but it still made Cecilia's head throb.
It felt like she had been shot in the head, like her soul had left her body.
Alaric's fists were clenched, his body covered in cold sweat, still staring hard at Pierce.
Pierce set the first gun aside. With a slow, practiced motion, he pulled out another gun from his clothes and swapped it with the empty one.
"Did you see my gun had no bullets?" he asked.
Alaric stayed silent.
His whole body seemed to tremble.
He didn't really show much emotion.
"Is it enough?" Alaric asked.
Pierce smiled, "Not enough."
Alaric's eyes narrowed.
Pierce went on, "This just shows you don't love Cecilia as much as you act like you do. Between love and career, you chose career."
"So what do you want?" Alaric asked coldly.
"I heard the Royal Family of Whitaker had a secret bodyguard group called Shadow Shield Security. They protected the leader since the Royal Family took over the Yakurosean Empire until they were overthrown by two big noble families. Shadow Shield Security seemed to vanish. But lately, there have been signs of them, and the noble families have tried hard but can't find any clues. Even sending us out got nothing." Alaric just listened coldly to Pierce's emotionless story.
Pierce continued, "I also heard there are people from Shadow Shield Security in my group, but they're so hidden we haven't found them. The noble family doesn't dare kill us all because training us is expensive, and they can't afford the consequences. So, with the Royal Family of Whitaker's current actions, Alaric, without verifying your identity, the noble family won't use you."
Alaric said, "You can choose not to use me."Pierce smirked, "But the noble family needs talent now. Dominic was their guy, but he's dead, so someone has to step up. That's you. They expect more from you than they ever did from Dominic." He laid it all out, "So here's the deal: either you join us, or you die here. No other options."
Alaric's fists tightened at Pierce's words, his anger bubbling up.
Pierce went on, "We talked about Shadow Shield Security; they're supposed to be way stronger than us. If you're with them, your assassination skills would be top-notch. If you beat me, it means you're with Shadow Shield Security or a descendant of the Royal Family of Whitaker!" Pierce's eyes narrowed. "Sorry, I wanted to use this to verify, but it messed up your relationship with Cecilia."
"Can you shut up!" Cassius couldn't take it anymore.
Pierce glared at Cassius.
Cassius snapped, "If you want a fight, let's go! You want to test Alaric? Test me first! Bring it on!"
Pierce said, "Do you think I'm stupid? If I fight you now, I'd have to let go of Cecilia. If I lose, I'm dead."
"If you lose, do you think you can walk away alive?" Cassius shot back.
"So I won't fight," Pierce said coldly.
"Fuck you." Cassius, known for his temper, shouted.
Pierce, unfazed, turned to Augustus, who stared back.
"If I remember right, Augustus used to be with the Phantom Sentinel Agency!" Pierce said bluntly.
Augustus's face tightened, but he stayed silent.
Pierce continued, "You were declared dead on a mission. How did you survive? If it wasn't for your connection to Alaric and our digging, no one would know you're still alive. You're really lucky!"
Pierce seemed genuinely envious.
He turned back, "Let's not waste time. Since Augustus was with the Phantom Sentinel Agency and was top-notch, his combat skills represent ours. So, Alaric will fight Augustus!"
"I really want to shoot you!" Cassius cursed angrily.
Pierce ignored him, "I'll count to three. If you don't fight, I'll shoot Cecilia for real this time. Don't doubt it—my gun has bullets! Three, two..."
Before Pierce could say "one," Alaric stepped forward and punched Augustus in the face.
Augustus took the hit hard but didn't fight back.
Alaric threw more punches, using Taekwondo and kickboxing moves, each strike full force.
But Augustus just kept taking the hits, letting Alaric pound him.
His face swelled, and his nose bled.
"If Augustus keeps taking hits, I'll kill Cecilia immediately!" Pierce threatened.
Alaric's face twisted in anger, "Fight back!"
Augustus looked at Alaric.
"I said fight me!" Alaric roared, his bloodshot eyes filled with determination.
