Chapter 445 Known Only to those Involved
Seraphina was sprawled out in bed, tossing and turning like a fish out of water, totally unable to catch some Z's.
Her brain was on overdrive, filled with mental snapshots of Dashiell and Penelope all cozy together, making her heart race like she just ran a marathon.
She just couldn't shake those images off.
She had really thought that, given Dashiell's personality, it would be hard for him to be with another woman. After all, for so many years, since high school, Dashiell had many admirers, but he rejected them all. Even during his years abroad, with so many stunning women chasing him, he remained single. So she thought Dashiell might really love her.
But now, she realized she was just overthinking it.
No one would truly love someone so selflessly and unwaveringly.
And she didn't really want Dashiell to be like that.
Despite how resolute she appeared about the divorce, she still felt a bit guilty.
She thought carefully and realized the guilt stemmed from not being able to protect their child, which would probably be her lifelong regret.
She didn't know how long it would take to let go.
Overwhelmed by her thoughts, sleep eluded her.
So, she sat up in bed.
She picked up the phone and called Cecilia.
It was almost instinctual; whenever something happened, she habitually turned to Cecilia.
Fortunately, even in the middle of the night, Cecilia answered her call.
Cecilia asked, "It's so late, why aren't you sleeping?"
Her voice carried a hint of reproach, but it was clear that there was more concern.
"I can't sleep," Seraphina comlained.
"So, what's keeping you up?" Cecilia also sat up in bed, forcing herself to wake up.
Seraphina wasn't someone who disregarded others' feelings. If she called in the middle of the night, something must be on her mind.
"I don't know," Seraphina shook her head.
"Just tell me," Cecilia said seriously.
Seraphina pursed her lips.
She knew she couldn't hide anything from Cecilia and said directly, "I divorced Dashiell today."
"So you're feeling reluctant," Cecilia said.
"No," Seraphina retorted. "After the divorce, I thought I should take my things from his place."
"Dashiell wouldn't let you?" Cecilia guessed.
"No." Seraphina was a bit angry. "Can you let me finish?"
"Okay, go ahead."
"Then I asked Sebastian to come with me to pack my things. Of course, Sebastian didn't go upstairs. I was afraid he would have bad memories of the place where Dashiell and I used to live, so I went alone. I didn't knock because I didn't think anything would be happening in the room, so I just entered the code and went in. Do you know what I saw?" Seraphina said in one breath.
"Just go on," Cecilia said coldly.
Seraphina swallowed and didn't beat around the bush, saying, "I saw Dashiell and Penelope in the living room. Penelope's naked body was on top of Dashiell's, and they were having sex."
"So you're jealous?" Cecilia raised an eyebrow.
"What are you talking about! I'm just sharing what I saw with you. I just found it unbelievable and shocking." Seraphina seemed a bit agitated.
Usually, when someone was agitated, it meant they've been hit on the mark.
Of course, Cecilia didn't expose her further.
Cecilia didn't want to push Seraphina over the edge.
Since Seraphina had chosen to divorce Dashiell, and Dashiell had let her go, there was no point in trying to patch things up.
Cecilia said, "Seraphina, I've told you before, love is vulnerable. Once you're disappointed, you'll let go completely, and you two will just be strangers. You know Dashiell better than anyone. He doesn't say much, keeps everything bottled up, but he knows what he wants. He won't let his life spiral out of control; he's super disciplined."
Seraphina bit her lip.
She knew how controlled Dashiell was.
"He's not one to linger on the sidelines. Once he's out, he's out. If he chose to divorce you, it means he's truly done with his feelings for you. The fact that he's letting another woman get close to him shows he's moved on and is giving himself a fresh start." Cecilia paused and continued, "Seraphina, the happiness of a marriage or relationship is a deeply personal experience, known only to those involved. It's your life. I have no right to interfere. If you're happy, that's all that matters. If you're unhappy, you'll have to deal with it yourself. Because Dashiell has left you."
"I didn't say I regret it!" Seraphina snapped back.
It was a defensive retort, showing she still couldn't face her own feelings.
Maybe she wouldn't let herself think about regret.
She wouldn't dig deep into it.
She still believed she loved Sebastian, not Dashiell.
Otherwise, why would she fall for Sebastian so hard although she met Dashiell first? It was because she loved Sebastian more.
So, she wouldn't regret it.
She was just a bit shocked.
She felt it was hard to accept Dashiell hooking up with Penelope so soon.
Cecilia didn't push further. "If you don't regret it, then don't ever regret it. It's late, get some rest. I gotta work tomorrow."
"I gotta work tomorrow too," Seraphina said.
"Have you figured it out?" Cecilia asked.
"No. Atticus reinstated the rule that if I don't work, I won't get a penny. So I have no choice but to go to work." Thinking of Atticus, Seraphina got angry.
"Atticus is doing it for your own good. You'll get it someday," Cecilia said.
"I don't want to get it," Seraphina shot back.
She wasn't falling for the emotional blackmail.
Because she could actually feel Atticus's love for her.
It was just that she couldn't fully accept it because of past events.
"Alright, get some sleep," Cecilia urged.
"Okay." Seraphina nodded and hung up the phone.
After hanging up, she still couldn't sleep.
She buried herself under the covers, trying to force herself to sleep.
Cecilia, on the other hand, also found it hard to sleep.
Being woken up by Seraphina in the middle of the night was really torturous.
She looked at the time, hesitated for a moment, and then called Alaric.
Alaric answered.
No matter when, as long as she called, Alaric would answer her call immediately.
It became a kind of happiness.
