Chapter 143 The Accident Occurs (2) Thrilling
On the wide street, it was late, and traffic had thinned out.
Cecilia gripped the handrail tightly, feeling the car's sudden acceleration.
Facing danger, she was nervous but tried to stay calm.
"Can we shake them off?" she asked Augustus.
"Very challenging," he replied. "I believe we are being followed by more than one car."
Cecilia's face tightened.
"Mrs. Whitaker, hold on tight," Augustus said, flooring the gas pedal.
The seatbelt dug into Cecilia as the car sped up.
The car behind them matched their speed, closing in.
Augustus made a sharp turn.
Without the seatbelt, Cecilia felt she might have flown out. She stifled a scream.
"Mrs. Whitaker, call Mr. Whitaker," Augustus said urgently.
Cecilia knew they needed help. She fumbled for her phone.
Due to Augustus's wild driving, it took a while to reach Alaric.
The phone rang for ages before he picked up.
Loud music blared in the background, then Alaric's teasing voice, "Cecilia, what's up?"
He sounded emotional.
"Alaric, we're being followed... Ah!" she screamed as Augustus braked hard, and her phone fell.
"Mrs. Whitaker, stay steady," Augustus said quickly.
"Okay," she replied, bending to retrieve the phone.
"Cecilia!" Alaric's urgent voice came through.
"I'm fine," she said quickly. "Several cars are chasing us. Augustus thinks it's Dominic."
"Give the phone to Augustus," Alaric said, now calm.
Cecilia put the phone on speaker and held it to Augustus.
"Alaric, speak. Augustus can hear you," she shouted.
"Where are you?" Alaric asked.
"Just past South Garden Road. Three modified cars are chasing us. They're trying to ram us. I can dodge for now, but if more come, we're in trouble..."
Another sharp turn.
Cecilia clung to the seat, keeping the phone from flying out.
"Cecilia," Alaric called again.
"I'm here," she replied, scared.
"Turn on real-time location sharing and keep the phone connected. I need to know your situation," Alaric instructed.
"Okay," she agreed, sharing her location.
The phone stayed connected, but Alaric was silent.
Cecilia had no idea what he was doing or if he could save them.
She couldn't afford to think too much right now.
The cars behind them were relentless. One wrong move, and she and Augustus would be toast.
Augustus drove like a maniac, making Cecilia feel like they were in a scene too wild for any movie.
Several times, it seemed like the car behind would crash into them, but Augustus always managed to dodge at the last second.
She thought, if it weren't for Augustus, she'd probably be dead by now.
She stayed laser-focused, not daring to get distracted.
Alaric's voice suddenly came through the phone, "Augustus."
"Yes," Augustus responded, still driving like a pro.
Cecilia was impressed. Even in this chaos, Augustus could talk to Alaric.
"At the next intersection, turn right, head straight to Sunset Boulevard. I'll have people intercept them at the end of the road."
"Got it." Augustus nodded and followed the instructions without hesitation.
The line went silent again.
Even though Alaric was helping, his coldness made Cecilia uneasy.
She bit her lip.She should be grateful that Alaric was willing to help. They were in a fake marriage; she couldn't expect too much. But his indifference stung.
He didn't even offer a word of comfort.
Even in a business deal, if your partner was about to die, wouldn't you show some concern?
"Ah!" Cecilia was momentarily distracted.
The car shook violently.
"Another one joined," Augustus said seriously.
Cecilia saw it too, coming from the right.
To avoid the new car, Augustus made a sharp turn, veering off Alaric's planned route.
"Mr. Whitaker," Augustus called into the phone.
No response.
"Mr. Whitaker," he called again.
Cecilia's nerves were frayed.
She thought, 'Did Alaric just leave the phone? How could he do that now?'
"Mr. ..."
"Augustus, speak," Alaric's cold voice finally came through.
He sounded calm, almost emotionless.
"There are now four cars. The new one forced me off the route. If they attack again, I might not be able to dodge," Augustus reported.
Augustus's voice was calm too.
"Follow your own path. Don't worry about the route, just stay safe. Hold on for five minutes, I'll be there," Alaric instructed.
"Yes."
The line went silent again.
Cecilia saw Augustus accelerating wildly, trying to shake off the cars with no clear direction.
On the street, it was one heart-pounding scene after another.
"Mrs. Whitaker, be careful!" Augustus shouted.
Cecilia saw a black modified car they had just shaken off coming at them from another direction like a bat out of hell. With the three cars still in pursuit from behind, Augustus was cornered with no escape.
She watched helplessly as the car got closer and closer.
