Chapter 512 The Outbreak of a Major Accident (5) Danger Occurs
Cassius nodded at Cecilia and took off right away.
Preston stayed back in Serenovia City, and Cecilia was adamant he should find a way to meet Alaric.
Cecilia always had a hunch that Alaric held a lot of clues.
So, Cecilia and Cassius hit the road with Augustus.
Dashiell had looked into Alaric's case and wanted to go with them to Harborvale, but Cecilia turned him down.
She knew they were being watched by the State Office. The fewer people involved, the safer they'd be. Plus, if things got dicey, they'd need someone on the outside to help.
Dashiell, being the practical guy he was, didn't push it.
By the time they rolled into Harborvale, it was already evening.
They headed straight to Alaric's place and found the front door sealed shut.
Cassius got pissed at the sight of the seal.
The idea of Alaric being set up made his blood boil.
He reached out to rip the seal off.
"What do you think you're doing?" a stern voice barked from behind.
Cecilia spun around.
Two cops in uniform were coming their way. "No unauthorized personnel allowed. Stop right now!"
Cassius clenched his fists, his anger making the veins on his face pop.
Cecilia held him back.
If they tangled with the cops now, they'd get locked up for sure. And if that happened, no one would be able to help Alaric prove his innocence. They'd be playing right into the enemy's hands.
Under Cecilia's steady gaze, Cassius managed to cool down.
"Let's go," Cecilia told him.
Cassius stormed off, with Cecilia and Augustus trailing behind.
They checked into a nearby hotel and got a room.
Cecilia suddenly remembered another time they went looking for Alaric; it was the three of them then too.
She felt a pang of nostalgia.
Since meeting Alaric, peaceful days had been few and far between.
"Since we're being watched, it's safer if we stay in one room," Cassius said bluntly.
"Okay," Cecilia agreed. "But we need to dodge their surveillance. If they know our every move, we're screwed."
"Yeah," Cassius nodded. "I've already got people working undercover. By tomorrow, we should know how many eyes are on us. Then we can figure out how to shake them and do our thing."
"When's Alaric's court date?" Cecilia asked.
"Mr. Collins said normally it should be within three months. But with Alaric, given the witnesses and evidence, it might be sooner. Still, since he's a public official, the case is more complicated. It shouldn't be rushed."
"Let's plan as if we have one month," Cecilia said.
Cassius looked at her.
"We can't let our guard down. They've already gone this far; who knows what else they'll pull," Cecilia added.
"Okay," Cassius agreed without hesitation.
He really admired Cecilia's calm and collected nature.
He'd been pretty anxious this time around.
But Cecilia always handled things with a cool head. "Let's get some rest tonight. Tomorrow, we'll figure out our roles and split up once we dodge the surveillance."
"Okay."
Everyone settled into their beds.
Cecilia had one to herself, while Cassius and Augustus shared another.
The room stayed lit, but it was eerily quiet.
Cecilia couldn't sleep.
She had no idea how Alaric was holding up in detention, and she wasn't sure if she could even save him.
She wasn't as composed and calm as she seemed. When things got quiet, panic set in.
In her past life, she had helped Dominic and had some dealings with noble families, but it was always behind the scenes, advising Dominic. She never had much direct interaction with any noble family and didn't know the full extent of their power. The only noble she had met, Lyra, was after Dominic had completely confined her, and they had never been close.
In this unfamiliar territory, she felt lost.
Cecilia gritted her teeth.
She never expected that in this new life, she'd be even more entangled with noble families.
In this life, her goal was simple: to make sure those who wronged her in the past would meet a miserable end and ruin their reputation!
She knew very well that the higher the power, the lower the chances of survival. Besides revenge, she only wanted to develop her family's business and never intended to get involved in the power struggles of noble families.
When she agreed to help Alaric with his career, it was just to offer advice. Once he reached the peak of his career, she planned to withdraw completely.
Ideals were beautiful, but reality was cruel.
In the end, she got herself deeply involved.
She even wondered, if the noble families were targeting Alaric this time, would they target her next?
Would they go after the so-called Four Great Families?
How ambitious were the noble families?
Dominic had used her family's wealth to curry favor with the noble families, indicating that they had long set their sights on the Four Great Families' assets.
So, this time it wasn't just about saving Alaric; she was also saving herself.
Now, she and Alaric were on the same side. Setting aside the romantic aspect, they were already inseparable.
Of course, she had no regrets.
In this life, the thing she didn't regret the most was meeting Alaric.
Cecilia tossed and turned for a long time.
Her mind kept racing.
After assessing the situation, she contemplated how to prove Alaric's innocence and whom to investigate.
"Cecilia!" Cassius suddenly called out to her, causing her heart to skip a beat.
In that instant, she knew something big had happened.
"Get under the bed!"
Cecilia quickly rolled off the bed and onto the floor.
Cassius and Augustus did the same.
The next second, they heard the door being kicked open.
At the same time, Cassius turned off all the lights in the room.
The room was plunged into darkness.
Cecilia was so nervous that her body was trembling.
At that moment, she didn't even know where Cassius and Augustus were hiding!
She saw through the light from the hallway that several men in combat boots entered the room one by one.
There were about four of them.
Cecilia's heart tightened.
Were they here to silence them so quickly?
Were the noble families so determined to burn their bridges?
