Chapter 257 Alaric Wins the Favor of His In-Laws
Alaric frowned and asked, "What's wrong?"
Cecilia looked at her phone in disbelief, thinking, 'How could it be 10 A.M. already?
'I usually wake up naturally at 7 A.M..
'No wonder I feel so well-rested when I woke up.
'I have overslept!
'Where was my alarm clock?!
'Why didn't it go off?'
She thought it was still early, so early that the alarm hadn't even rung.
She had even played around with Alaric in bed for a while just now...'
"What's wrong?" Alaric asked again, seeing that Cecilia hadn't spoken for a while.
"Who turned off my alarm clock?" Cecilia turned to question Alaric.
Actually, she didn't need to ask; it had to be him.
"I did." Alaric acknowledged.
Cecilia asked, "Why did you turn off my alarm? I'm late for work now..."
"It's Saturday," Alaric reminded her.
Cecilia was stunned.
She just stared at Alaric.
She thought, 'No wonder Alaric slept until now too.'
She pressed her lips, asking, "I work on Saturdays, too."
"Who's going to take responsibility if you get exhausted?" Alaric asked her.
Cecilia replied, 'It's none of your business."
"Stay home and rest this weekend," Alaric said in a domineering tone, clearly not allowing any argument.
Cecilia asked, "Why?!"
"Because I'll be home with you," Alaric said seriously, then turned back to his phone, "What were we just talking?"
And then he continued his conversation with Cassius.
Cecilia was speechless.
She thought, 'Why does Alaric get to control me?
'Why do I have to stay home just because he's home?'
She suddenly thought of Dominic from her past life.
She couldn't remember how long it had been since Dominic had had a weekend.
He always said he was busy on weekends.
He said he was busy during the weekdays too.
The time they spent together was pitifully little.
Because of that little time, Dominic always remembered small things, like sending her flowers on her birthday or giving her a bottle of perfume on their wedding anniversary. She used to be so touched, thinking that Dominic, despite being so busy, would still surprise her.
Later, she found out that it was all done by his assistant.
He just needed to send her a message on time.
She pressed her lips and looked at Alaric, who was on the phone with Cassius.
She thought, 'This man never says anything.
'But every time, he makes me feel warm with his actions.
'Is he just that good at teasing, or as he said, he likes me?
'How could he like me?
'I didn't seem to have done anything for him.
'Alaric doesn't seem like someone who would fall for someone easily.'
"I know I'm very handsome, but if you keep staring at me like that, I'll get shy, Ms. Lockhart," Alaric said after finishing his call, looking up to see Cecilia's intense gaze.
Cecilia quickly snapped out of it.
She thought, 'Alaric is just lucky to be good-looking.
'He is clearly a rogue.'
But she just couldn't bring herself to hate him.
"I need to go back to the Lockhart Mansion later," Cecilia said, not trying to argue with Alaric and changing the subject.
Since she wasn't going to work today, she needed to go back and discuss the lawsuit with Theodore.
Alaric said, "I'll go with you."
Cecilia rejected, "No need, you should rest at home. A patient should be resting at home, shouldn't he?"
Alaric added, "No, you need me."
Cecilia said, "Alaric..."
"Trust me," Alaric said with a slight smile, "I'm more useful than you think."
Cecilia thought no one could be more narcissistic than Alaric.
In the end, Cecilia went back to the Lockhart family with Alaric.
Theodore and Genevieve were naturally very enthusiastic.
"Alaric, I heard you got into the civil service?" Theodore said happily.
Cecilia thought, 'Has Dad forgotten he is still entangled in a lawsuit?'
Alaric spoke with such charm, "I'm not very interested in the family business, but I can't be idle, after all, having married Cecilia means I need to take on the responsibilities of a family. That's why I decided to pursue a career in public service."
The elders' hearts melted at these words, which were both a declaration of his career ambitions and an expression of his love for Cecilia. Alaric not only knew how to win a woman's heart but also gained the favor of her parents. Not entering diplomacy was a genuine loss for the country.
"In all these years in our wealthy family, we've never had anyone go into politics. I'm the first to support your decision," Theodore quickly expressed his viewpoint.
"I'll do my best," Alaric assured.
He presented a picture of an ideal son-in-law.
Cecilia really wished to tell Theodore that this man was cunning.
His motive for entering politics was all about himself and had nothing to do with her.
"It's rare for Alaric and Cecilia to come home. Can you two stop talking about work?" Genevieve interrupted unhappily, "Alaric, come and try the fruit I bought from the fresh market."
Genevieve hurriedly invited Alaric over.
Alaric quickly approached and ate a piece with a fruit fork. "It's sweet."
"Have more," Genevieve said, proffering several pieces to Alaric with the fork.
Cecilia was sitting right there beside Genevieve.
Genevieve didn't even glance at her; her eyes were filled with Alaric.
Cecilia thought, 'Who is her real child?'
"Mom, I want some too." Cecilia pouted.
Genevieve looked back at her. "It's right in front of you. Can't you get it yourself?"
"Alaric, come over, have more." Genevieve beamed, once again turning her attention to Alaric.
"Thank you, Mom," Alaric smiled politely.
He couldn't help but look at Cecilia, challenging her.
Cecilia rolled her eyes, thinking, 'Is he really that childish?
'Mom treats him so well because of me, so why is he showing off?
'He's really digging into it.'
Just then, she thought of something.
Her parents weren't this warm with Dominic in her last life.
"Cecilia," Theodore suddenly called out.
"Dad." Cecilia turned her attention to Theodore.
"The prosecutor's office has announced that due to clear eyewitness and material evidence, the trial will be held next Friday, a week from now." Theodore was still somewhat worried.
Cecilia couldn't help but glance at Alaric.
This glance made Alaric's heart flutter.
She thought, 'Am I relying on him?
'Instinctively relying on Alaric?
'In this new life, didn't I say I would rely on myself?'
"Don't worry, Dad. Cecilia and I have already figured out how to defend you in court. Just wait for your acquittal." Alaric seemed confident.
"I studied the case myself yesterday. It's difficult to acquit." Theodore still had some doubts.
Alaric insisted, "There are many loopholes in the case, it's not difficult. You have to trust us."
"I'm not doubting, I'm just afraid of burdening you."
"We're a family, it's not bothersome." Alaric seemed a bit upset.
Theodore smiled with relief.
Previously, he really wasn't going to agree to Cecilia's marriage with Alaric.
At this moment, he felt grateful and acknowledged that Cecilia had indeed found a reliable man.
