Chapter 344 Seraphina's Feeling Unwell
Cecilia and Theodore rolled up together at the Innovation Arc launch gig.
The place was poppin'.
Reporters were everywhere, mingling with the guests.
Cecilia and Theodore snagged seats right in the front row.
Up front, besides the bigwigs from the planning department, were the four major families.
So yeah, that meant the Whitakers, the Lockharts, the Everharts, and the Kingsleys were all in the house.
"Cecilia!" Seraphina hollered, practically bouncing in her seat a few spots down.
Cecilia kept it cool, flashing a calm smile.
But Seraphina? She was so hyped she hiked up her dress and dashed over to Cecilia, not giving a damn about appearances. "You're here too! I thought I was the only one dragged to this snoozefest with Atticus."
Cecilia motioned for Seraphina to keep it down.
The planning department big shots were right next to them.
Calling their event boring to their faces? Only Seraphina would be that bold.
"I wanna sit with you." Seraphina pouted.
Cecilia thought for a sec, then got up and walked with Seraphina over to Atticus. "Hey Atticus, mind swapping seats with Theodore so I can sit with Seraphina?"
"Sure thing," Atticus said, all smiles. "Just keep an eye on her, don't let her make a scene."
"Got it." Cecilia nodded.
Seraphina looked annoyed.
Cecilia pulled her down into a seat. "Chill out."
"If he's so worried I'll embarrass him, he shouldn't have dragged me here. I didn't even wanna come," Seraphina grumbled.
"Cut Atticus some slack. You're his only kid. What's he gonna do if you don't step up?" Cecilia said. "He even got divorced for you. Ever think about how lonely he must be?"
Seraphina pouted, stumped by Cecilia's words.
Honestly, things had gotten a bit better between them since Seraphina started working.
She'd noticed Atticus seemed to have aged a lot.
At the last big meeting, she saw him coughing through his speech, gray hairs peeking out at his temples.
Seraphina didn't wanna dwell on it.
Mary's death was a memory she couldn't shake.
And she'd never forgive Atticus for it.
At 3 PM, the Innovation Arc launch officially kicked off.
The Serenovia City planning department leaders delivered a speech, followed by a presentation on the Innovation Arc plans, and concluded by announcing the bidding for the Innovation Arc.
Cecilia was all ears the whole time.
Seraphina couldn't get how Cecilia could sit there so chill during such a drag of a ceremony.
Seraphina felt like her seat was made of nails, she just couldn't sit still.
The whole thing dragged on for an hour and a half.
When it finally wrapped up, the guests and reporters started to clear out.
"Cecilia, let's grab dinner tonight." Seraphina clung to her.
Cecilia sighed. "I gotta get back to work on the plans."
"Can't you do that tomorrow? I heard Alaric left Serenovia City today. Don't you need some company when you're all alone?" Seraphina pleaded.
Cecilia couldn't say no to Seraphina.
From way back when they were kids, if Seraphina bugged Cecilia to do something that didn't clash with her principles, Cecilia usually caved.
She hesitated for a couple of seconds, then called out to Theodore, who was chatting with Atticus, "Dad, I'm not heading back to the office. Seraphina and I got some stuff to handle."
Theodore grinned.
He knew they just wanted to hang out.
He didn't call them out and said, "Alright, I'll head back with the driver."
"Cool." Cecilia nodded.
Theodore exchanged a few more words with Atticus before they split.
Cecilia had Augustus come pick them up.
It was still early, so Seraphina suggested they hit up the nearby mall.
Cecilia agreed.
Out of nowhere, Seraphina clutched her stomach and puked.
Cecilia was taken aback. "What's up?"
"I dunno, maybe a bit carsick," Seraphina said, looking queasy.
"Aren't you usually not carsick?"
"Ever since I got wasted at Alaric's birthday bash, my stomach's been off. I even think I might have a stomach issue," Seraphina explained.
"Have you seen a doc?" Cecilia asked, worried.
"I thought it'd pass in a few days, so I didn't go. Plus, hospitals freak me out. Mary died in one," Seraphina said, still shaken.
Cecilia held Seraphina's hand, feeling a pang of sadness.
She remembered when Seraphina watched Mary die right in front of her.
Seraphina was really torn up back then.
"I'll go with you to the hospital. Don't be scared," Cecilia said.
"No," Seraphina refused. "I don't wanna go."
"You have to," Cecilia said firmly.
"If they find something wrong, I would be scared."
"If they do, I'll keep it from you," Cecilia said bluntly.
"Are you jinxing me?!" Seraphina snapped.
Cecilia smirked. "Don't worry, you'll live to be a thousand."
Seraphina was totally speechless.
Cecilia told Augustus, "Head to the Metropolitan Hospital."
"I said I don't wanna go..."
"Chill, you're not gonna die from this," Cecilia cut her off.
The car stopped at the hospital.
Cecilia dragged Seraphina to see a gastro specialist at the Metropolitan Hospital, sitting her down in front of the doc.
"When did you start feeling off?" the doc asked.
"Why'd you wait so long to see a doc?"
"'Cause I'm scared of dying," Seraphina said bluntly.
Cecilia was speechless.
The doc was also a bit taken aback.
"How old are you?"
"22."
"Got a boyfriend?" the doc asked.
"What's that got to do with my stomach?"
"Do you?" the doc pressed, looking serious.
Seraphina shook her head. "No."
"Actually," Cecilia chimed in, "She's got a husband."
The doc glanced at Seraphina.
Seraphina looked away.
"How long you been hitched?"
"Why're you prying into my personal life?" Seraphina snapped.
She thought, 'Since when did seeing a doc mean spilling your whole life story?'
Cecilia pulled Seraphina aside and said to the doc, "They've been married for about two months."
"Using any contraception?" the doc asked bluntly.
Seraphina almost choked on her own spit. "Are you for real? Why you digging into my private life?"
