Chapter 226 Interview (2) Crushing Dominic

Everyone in the hall was a bit surprised to see Alaric.

The so-called officials of the Yakurosean Empire were actually reserve personnel. If they passed the exam, they had a shot at joining a noble family.

In the Yakurosean Empire, noble families held the power and controlled many aspects of the empire. So, any ambitious young person aiming for politics would choose this path.

Luckily, this path was pretty fair and open. As long as the candidates hadn't committed a crime, they could pass the exam, go through an interview, and join a noble family. The process was fair and transparent because the two major noble families balanced each other out. They picked their own talents, so favoritism was almost impossible.

"Mr. Whitaker is here for the interview too," one interviewee said, surprised.

It made sense for Dominic to switch from business to politics. He'd been improving himself in that direction for years and often said in the media that he wasn't interested in business and wanted to serve the country. His intentions to join a noble family were clear.

But Alaric was a different story. Before marriage, he was a playboy with a bad reputation. After marriage, he toned it down but never showed any interest in joining a noble family. Unlike Jasper and Christopher, who could almost run the Whitaker Group, Alaric was seen as useless.

No one expected Alaric to choose this path. Even if he didn't go into business and stayed a spendthrift, he wouldn't be here. Did he even know how tough it was to become an official? Besides the exam, there was a strict interview process focusing on a person's background. A scandal-ridden guy like Alaric could never meet the noble family's standards.

"Maybe he's just here for fun," someone whispered.

"I don't know how he passed the written exam."

"I heard he's a high school graduate. That came out when he married Cecilia."

"Maybe it was fake," someone suggested.

"Who knows. But you can't fake the official exam. Maybe he just got lucky and barely passed."

"Maybe."

"By the way, Mr. Kingsley, you're the top scorer, right?" an interviewee asked curiously.

Dominic's face changed slightly. He thought he was the top scorer, but when he checked, he was second. He had studied hard and even got some exam questions in advance but still got beaten.

"It must be you," the interviewer guessed, not getting an answer.

The official exam results weren't publicly announced. Only candidates could check their own scores and rankings. Dominic didn't refute, thinking the top scorer didn't dare compete with him. He assumed the top scorer was a bookworm who wouldn't steal his limelight. He also thought he'd ace the interview and join a noble family with the highest total score.

As everyone was thinking, a staff member suddenly appeared in the hall. He looked serious and unapproachable.

"The interview will start in 5 minutes," he announced. "The order will be based on the written exam scores. The top scorer will go first, and so on."

Dominic's face changed. He hadn't expected the rankings to be announced this way.

"I heard the first interviewee doesn't have an advantage. But Mr. Kingsley will be fine," someone flattered Dominic, hoping to gain his favor if they both joined a noble family. Dominic was seen as the biggest backer among their group.

"Now I'll read the list. Remember your number. The interview will proceed in that order," the staff member said. "Number 1, Alaric; Number 2, Dominic; Number 3..."

Everyone was shocked. They stared at Alaric, then at Dominic. 'Wasn't Dominic supposed to be the top scorer? How did it become Alaric?'

Knowing the exam was strict and fair, everyone's view of Alaric changed. Alaric, however, stayed calm and even glanced at Dominic, wondering how he felt being overshadowed.

"Alright, the top 5, follow me to the interview room. Others, please stay quiet and wait," the staff member said, then turned and left. The top 5 followed him.

Inside the interview room, ten imposing and somewhat intimidating people sat waiting.

"Before we start, a reminder: to ensure fairness, the interview room is equipped with cameras and is being live-streamed online. Please, interviewers, mind your manners," the staff member said. "First interviewee, Alaric, please introduce yourself."

Alaric nodded politely. "Thank you," he said, giving off a well-mannered impression. He turned to the interviewers. "I am Alaric, 25 years old, married. I graduated from Fors University with dual master's degrees in economics and a minor in social law, with excellent grades. I graduated with a master's degree at 22, returned to Serenovia City, and joined the Whitaker Group. Due to my lack of interest in business, I left within a month. I then self-studied political books at home, passed the adult class of the Yakurosean Empire's highest Public Affairs and Governance University, and obtained a degree equivalent to a full-time bachelor's degree. My graduation thesis was published as a model on the Public Affairs and Governance University website..."

Cecilia, sitting in her office, paused her work to watch Alaric's interview. When she heard him introduce himself as "married," she felt an indescribable emotion. Most people didn't mention their marital status in an interview. Alaric's thinking was indeed different.

His self-introduction also surprised Cecilia. She knew he was well-educated, especially after he embarrassed Ophelia at the wedding. But she didn't expect he had so many achievements. He seemed to be playing every day, and she used to see his gossip news almost daily. 'Did he study while partying? Should I give him a diligence award?' she thought.
