Chapter 517 Outburst (10) Being Tricked
Cecilia spent the whole afternoon in Alaric's room but came up empty-handed.
She opened the door and stepped out.
Augustus was waiting outside and could see the disappointment she couldn't hide.
"Didn't find anything?" Augustus asked.
"Nothing," Cecilia replied.
Augustus stayed quiet.
"No one came by?" Cecilia asked.
"Nope."
Cecilia's eyes narrowed. "Let's get out of here."
"Alright."
Just as they were about to hit the elevator button, the doors opened.
An elderly person stepped out.
The elderly person glanced at Cecilia and Augustus, seemed to realize he didn't know them, and walked past.
Augustus walked straight into the elevator.
Cecilia hesitated, looked back, and saw the elderly person walking slowly, stopping diagonally across from Alaric's door, then opening his own door and going in.
"Mrs. Whitaker?" Augustus called out to Cecilia.
She snapped back to reality and quickly walked into the elevator.
The elevator went all the way down.
Then Cecilia got into Augustus's car and they left.
Cecilia's mind was racing.
Even when they arrived at the nightclub, she was still lost in thought.
"Mrs. Whitaker?" Augustus called out to her again.
Cecilia pressed her lips together.
She opened the car door and got out with Augustus.
They walked into the secret room.
One of the nightclub's managers followed them in and respectfully said to Cecilia, "We just got word that Mr. Blackburn is currently detained for trespassing at the State Office. He asked me to tell you not to worry; he won't be in trouble."
Cecilia bit her lip.
She had expected this, but it still stung when it happened.
After the manager finished reporting, he left.
The room was just Cecilia and Augustus now.
Augustus didn't dare disturb her and stood quietly by her side.
Cecilia's mind was a mess.
Just when she hadn't sorted anything out, her phone rang.
Seeing Dominic's call, she hung up immediately.
She didn't want to hear his voice; she feared she couldn't control herself.
The call was hung up, but a message popped up on the phone screen.
Dominic: [Are you ignoring my invitation?]
Cecilia looked at it coldly.
From the words, she could see Dominic's arrogance.
Dominic: [On the 28th of this month, at the Sunset Hotel in Serenovia City, you're invited to my wedding with Lyra.]
Cecilia controlled her anger.
She had to admit that Dominic had thoroughly provoked her today.
It wasn't that she was jealous of his marriage; she was just feeling a bit restless because she didn't have any leads now. His flaunting made her lose her composure for a moment.
She gritted her teeth and dialed the phone.
"I thought you wouldn't answer my call. Are you now jealous that I'm getting married?"
"Dominic, do you believe that I can record every word you say and play it for Lyra?" Cecilia said coldly.
Dominic was clearly rattled.
His face darkened. "Cecilia, you're so devious."
"We both know who's more devious!" Cecilia shot back coldly.
Dominic sneered, "Even now, Cecilia, you still manage to leave me speechless. I gotta hand it to you! Were you just playing dumb back then?"
Cecilia let out a cold laugh. She wished all the humiliation she suffered from him was just an act.
"Forget it, it doesn't matter to me anymore," Dominic suddenly said, trying to sound magnanimous. "Anyway, to me, you're still a loser! You still can't beat me!"
Cecilia remained silent, not wanting to waste another word on Dominic.
Then she heard Dominic say, "By the way, I heard Cassius got arrested too."
Cecilia's face darkened.
"The heir of the Blackburn Family. I just don't get why he would revolve around you and Alaric! Now he's ended up in detention too. I heard it's ten or twenty days. Do you think someone who enjoys life so much will get used to it in there?"
"Shut up," Cecilia said coldly.
"Cecilia, I'm calling you today out of goodwill. You'd better stay out of Alaric's business, or next time it might be you in detention instead of Cassius!" Dominic laughed maniacally, then added, "Did you ever think that one day I'd force you into this position, just like you forced me back then?"
"So you want to tell me that Alaric's embezzlement and bribery charges were all your doing!" Cecilia said.
"What nonsense are you talking about!" Dominic was furious.
No matter how much Dominic flaunted, he was still cautious.
He wouldn't really let anything slip.
And Cecilia's goal was simple: to make Dominic shut up!
And the best way to make him shut up wasn't to hang up on him but to make him afraid to speak.
"Watch yourself!" Dominic abruptly hung up the phone.
He probably wouldn't call again, because he was still wary that she might really expose his plan.
Cecilia put down her phone, her face looking grim.
Augustus couldn't help but ask, "Mrs. Whitaker, is the situation really bad now?"
"Not great." Cecilia didn't hide it. "I'm starting to think we've fallen into their trap!"
"What do you mean?"
"When we got off the plane, we went to Alaric's house first, but we were immediately asked to leave. That moment gave us a false signal, making us think there must be something wrong there, so we'd try to get in. But today, when we got in, no one stopped us. No matter how Cassius tried to divert attention, there should have been someone there. I was inside for so long, and no one came to stop me," Cecilia explained.
Augustus still didn't get it.
She elaborated, "This shows that they deliberately let us go there. They must have known we'd try to get in, so they expected us to create a diversion, likely by causing a scene at the State Office. Their goal was to catch the person causing the scene."
After Cecilia finished, her face grew even colder.
On the way back in the car, she had been thinking about this.
Dominic's call, though not explicit, was filled with the satisfaction of a successful scheme.
