Chapter 511 The Outbreak of a Major Accident (4) The Trip to Harborvale
On the way to the prosecutor's office, Cecilia's phone wouldn't stop ringing.
Caspian, Arabella, Theodore, and Genevieve, among others, were all freaking out when they heard about Alaric's arrest.
Cecilia managed to handle all the calls.
Finally, they got to the prosecutor's office.
As they walked in, they were told that the staff member Preston had an appointment with had to leave suddenly, and someone else would be helping them.
The new staff member was super cold. "We can't approve the bail documents you submitted. Since this involves a crime by a State Office employee and the news impact, we're detaining Alaric until the court hearing. Then, based on the court's ruling, we'll deal with him accordingly."
Cecilia bit her lip.
So today's news was planned.
She forced herself to stay calm.
Preston didn't push too hard either. He asked, "Can I see him now?"
"No," the staff member said flatly. "Our department is interrogating the suspect, and any external interference could mess up the investigation."
Preston looked at Cecilia, who stayed silent.
Sometimes, money really was useless against power.
Preston compromised and said, "Then can I get a copy of Alaric's case file?"
"Yes," the staff member replied coldly. "Sign the necessary documents, and once you give me the receipt, I'll provide you with the case details."
"Alright."
Preston went to handle the paperwork.
Cassius and Cecilia waited outside, both feeling a bit uneasy.
But they both tried hard to stay composed.
What should have taken just a few minutes ended up taking Preston the whole morning. It was only around noon that he finally got everything sorted and got the detailed case file for Alaric.
Back in the car, Preston studied the case.
Cecilia also looked at it, and Cassius was getting agitated. "They did it on purpose!"
He couldn't hold it in any longer.
Cecilia glanced at Cassius but didn't stop him.
She knew this case would have many more frustrating moments ahead.
They could only adjust themselves.
The car returned to Alaric's villa.
After reviewing the case file, Preston analyzed the situation, "The evidence of Alaric's crime is pretty clear. During his nearly six-month tenure in Harborvale, he was responsible for two major local economic projects, from land planning to contractor recommendations. According to the case details we have, Alaric created two sets of fake accounts for these projects, embezzling over $50 million. The most damning evidence is that this cash was found in Alaric's home!"
"In his home?" Cassius said in disbelief. "How could he have that much cash at home? It must be a setup!"
"It's hard to fake this," Preston handed the photos to Cassius. "These are pictures of the cash found in Alaric's home. The other party definitely has surveillance footage of the entire search, so it shouldn't be fake."
"Would Alaric not know about that much cash in his own home?" Cassius couldn't understand.
"I finally get why the State Office was so eager to have Alaric come back for a week to hand over his work and even promoted him," Cecilia said, fuming. "It was all a distraction to keep him busy in Serenovia City while they planted the money in his home. Now, with the embezzlement report, they went straight to his place and 'found' the money. With witnesses and physical evidence, Alaric's screwed no matter what!"
Cassius was livid. "I knew he'd get framed, but not like this!"
Cecilia looked at Cassius, puzzled.
He continued, "So what do we do now? The evidence is so clear!"
Preston was also feeling the pressure.
From a legal standpoint, the chances of winning this case were slim to none.
"Mr. Collins, according to the laws of the Yakurosean Empire, for a crime like Alaric's, if all the money is returned and he shows good remorse, what's the minimum sentence?"
"It's a big crime, but if everything goes well, five to ten years," Preston said.
"Five to ten years!" Cassius couldn't accept it.
Cecilia, on the other hand, stayed calm.
She figured that since the other side went to such lengths, they wouldn't just settle for Alaric serving five to ten years in prison.
There might be more conspiracies.
And if there were new conspiracies, there might still be a chance to find evidence.
"Cecilia, why are you so calm all of a sudden?" Cassius looked at her, frustrated. "In five to ten years, the world will change a lot."
Cecilia took a deep breath and said, "Cassius, has Mr. Blackburn found out if any noble families are involved?"
Cassius was taken aback and quickly said, "I'll check."
He walked aside with his phone.
After a while, he came back looking worried. "My dad said he's been asking around but only knows that the State Office is taking this case very seriously. No noble families have openly intervened yet. So it's still unclear which noble families are involved."
Cecilia nodded, having already suspected as much.
The State Office was controlled by noble families.
Since the State Office could be an accomplice, this case must be masterminded by noble families!
Cecilia frowned.
She couldn't figure out why noble families would frame Alaric.
She only knew that Dominic couldn't stand to see Alaric doing well, but Dominic had already been abandoned by the noble families. What power did he have to get them to help him again?
Cecilia was deep in thought.
"Cecilia." Cassius was very unsettled.
Seeing Cecilia lost in thought, he was really on the verge of breaking down!
Cecilia's eyes moved slightly, and she asked, "Do you think Alaric would be so easily framed?"
Cassius was stunned.
At that moment, he was clearly reminded by Cecilia's words.
He affirmed, "No."
"During Alaric's time in Harborvale, he knew he might be framed, so he must have been very cautious. The fact that he was framed in the end means it wasn't easy to frame him," Cecilia analyzed. "Since Alaric got into trouble in Harborvale, we should go to Harborvale and take a look!"
She strongly felt that nothing could be flawless, and Alaric wouldn't allow the other side to achieve a flawless setup!
