Chapter 542 The First Trial (2) Court Appearance
In front of the reporters, Cecilia tried to keep her cool.
Right now, she couldn't defend Alaric at all.
"I can't answer any of your questions," she said. "I believe in the fairness of the law, and I'll abide by its final judgment."
As soon as she finished, the crowd went wild.
Cecilia's words made it seem like she didn't trust Alaric and was just covering her own back.
People had been saying Cecilia was running around trying to help Alaric. But lately, there were rumors she was just going to work like normal. Folks thought she had given up on him.
Looked like the rumors were true.
A reporter asked, "Ms. Lockhart, do you regret being with Alaric? You were supposed to marry Dominic. If Alaric hadn't shown up, maybe you and Dominic could've worked things out. Now, your happiness is ruined because of this jerk. Was it worth it?"
Jerk?
Cecilia clenched her fists.
Cassius, unable to keep his cool, rushed out from beside Cecilia and started beating the reporter.
Cecilia didn't stop him.
If she could, she would've done the same.
Now, thanks to Cassius, the scene turned chaotic.
Cecilia gave Augustus a look, and he quickly moved to protect her, helping her get out smoothly.
As they walked up the steps, they heard a reporter shout, "Dominic and Lyra are here!"
Everyone immediately stopped trying to break up the fight and left.
Cassius let go of the reporter he had beaten to the ground and said, "If you talk nonsense again, I'll shut you up for good."
The reporter, now covered in injuries, said, "I will sue you."
"Whatever!" Cassius snapped, then walked away.
He joined Cecilia.
Following her gaze, he saw Dominic and Lyra. These two were now the stars of Serenovia City.
Cassius clenched his fists, itching to go at it again.
"Let's go," Cecilia said, turning her eyes away. "They won't be smug for long."
Cassius held back and left with Cecilia.
In the distance, Dominic sneered, feeling extremely satisfied as he kept glancing at Cecilia, watching her leave in despair.
After waiting for so long, he finally managed to bring Cecilia to her knees.
"Mr. Kingsley, why did you come to watch Alaric's trial today?" The reporter's tone towards Dominic was noticeably more respectful, even a bit obsequious.
Everyone knew that Dominic was now a big shot in Serenovia City.
On one hand, he was the heir to one of the four major wealthy families, and on the other, he was the son-in-law of the Monroe family.
Dominic replied, "We were colleagues, and out of friendship, I came. Besides, since this involves the State Office, it's only natural that I should be concerned."
"So, Mr. Kingsley, do you have anything to say about Alaric's case?" the reporter continued. "From our perspective, the Whitaker family is known for their generosity, and Alaric's actions are always so grand. It's surprising to hear about him embezzling millions of dollars."
"It's not about the money," Dominic said, "It's about losing control in the face of the temptation of power."
"Mr. Kingsley, do you mean that Alaric was just enjoying the sense of accomplishment that power brought him?" the reporter asked.
"Of course, this needs to be determined by the court," Dominic said, dodging the question.
"So, Mr. Kingsley, given the current situation, how long do you think Alaric will be sentenced? Could it be the death penalty, considering it involves a life?" the reporter asked.
"I'm not a judge; I can't give you any answers," Dominic said cautiously. Then he wrapped his arm around Lyra, and they looked all lovey-dovey. "Sorry, we need to go in now."
The reporters got the hint and stepped aside, not daring to mess with them.
The cameras captured Dominic and Lyra's affectionate backs as they walked away.
Their love story made the headlines again, and everyone was jealous.
Cecilia sat in the courtroom audience.
She pulled out her phone and quietly looked at it.
She seemed calm, but no one knew how nervous she really was. After all, she was about to see Alaric.
She scrolled through the news on her phone.
Today's news was updated fast. The interview with the reporters and Cassius beating up the reporter was already up, and she even saw the lovey-dovey pics of Dominic and Lyra.
Cecilia's eyes flickered.
She looked at Dominic, who was carefully helping Lyra sit in the audience not far away.
After Lyra sat down, she deliberately glanced at Cecilia.
Their eyes met, and Lyra's smile was full of pride. Cecilia quickly looked away. She vividly remembered the scenes from her past life where Lyra and Dominic had tortured her—memories that were unforgettable for a lifetime.
"Cecilia!" Suddenly, Seraphina's voice sounded in her ear.
Cecilia glanced back, gradually pulling herself away from her hatred.
"There are so many reporters outside. Alaric's influence is really huge!" Seraphina remarked excitedly.
When it came to joining in the commotion, Seraphina was always at the front.
"Are you very nervous?" Seeing Cecilia not speaking, Seraphina quickly asked with concern.
Cecilia said, "Yes."
"Don't be nervous. Alaric is innocent and will be acquitted." Seraphina tried to comfort her.
The first trial wouldn't be that easy.
She had evidence, but what she truly wanted was to take revenge on Dominic!
Just as Seraphina was about to say something else, she saw Dashiell walk in and calmly sit next to Cassius.
At the same time, Penelope walked towards Dashiell.
Seraphina shifted her gaze, looking at the courtroom that was still being prepared.
"Dashiell, Dominic said Alaric's case is already decided. You shouldn't hang around with Cecilia anymore; it won't be good for your reputation." Penelope spoke bluntly.
She didn't care about anyone else's feelings.
Dashiell's face visibly darkened.
Cassius, listening beside him, immediately changed his expression, "Do you believe I'll punch you to death!"
Penelope was so frightened by Cassius that her face turned pale.
She gritted her teeth and said, "Dashiell, I'm doing this for your good."
Seeing Cassius's face getting darker, Penelope walked away from Dashiell. As she left, she said, "I'll come back to find you later, alone."
Cassius watched Penelope's back, cursed a few times, and then said, "Dashiell, why are the women you choose always of such low quality?"
Dashiell rolled his eyes at Cassius.
"None of them have any manners," Cassius muttered.
Seraphina's face turned pale as she listened. Clearly, Cassius was scolding her as well. Just as she was about to retort, she noticed the courtroom staff, along with witnesses, suspects, and lawyers, entering one after another.
Seraphina couldn't help but glance at Cecilia. She noticed that Cecilia's gaze was fixed, unwavering, on Alaric as he was led out in handcuffs.
