Chapter 578 Penelope's Tragic End
Cecilia sat on the toilet, her face still flushed with embarrassment, and her heart pounding.
"That jerk Alaric," she muttered under her breath.
Luckily, she always brought her phone to the bathroom.
She pulled out her phone and started scrolling through the news to calm down.
As soon as she opened her phone, a headline grabbed her attention.
#Penelope's Body Found Floating Off the Coast of Seraphic Sea, Retrieved by Local Fishing Boat.
Cecilia quickly clicked on the article and saw some pixelated images.
Even though the images were blurry, Cecilia could tell the woman bloated by seawater was Penelope.
So Penelope died last night?
How did she die?
When she had Dashiell rescue Lyra, Cecilia had thought Dashiell might let Penelope go.
Of course, Cecilia didn't want Dashiell to spare Penelope, but she didn't want to make things hard for him.
After all, to Dashiell, Penelope's feelings for him made it reasonable for him to let her go.
So after Dominic and Octavia were arrested and Penelope disappeared, Cecilia didn't press Dashiell about it.
She never expected to see news of Penelope's death today, even before hearing about Dominic and Octavia.
What exactly happened?
Could it be that someone from the Monroe family found and killed Penelope?
Cecilia thought for a moment and called Dashiell.
At that moment, Dashiell was getting dressed.
Because Dashiell was injured, Lucy, who didn't usually stay over, had spent the night to help him get dressed.
Lucy wrapped Dashiell's back in gauze, covering the wounds, but the injuries from the previous night were still fresh in her memory.
As she helped him dress, she was extremely careful and couldn't help but say, "Mr. Rainier, maybe you shouldn't go to work. Putting on clothes might touch your wounds, and what if they reopen?"
"It's nothing," Dashiell said calmly.
He had already managed to put on his shirt and buttoned it himself.
Lucy couldn't understand why Dashiell was pushing himself so hard.
He was clearly well-off; he didn't need the income from working at Everhart Bank since he was already very wealthy.
Why was Dashiell making things difficult for himself?
As Lucy was about to continue persuading him, Dashiell's phone rang, and she fell silent.
Dashiell looked at the caller ID and answered, "Cecilia."
Cecilia asked, "Did you see the news?"
"What?" Dashiell, indeed, hadn't seen the news.
"Penelope is dead," Cecilia said directly. "Her body was found by a local fishing boat in Seraphic Sea."
"I see," Dashiell responded.
Cecilia frowned slightly and asked, "Aren't you surprised?"
The next moment, she seemed to realize something.
"You knew already?" Cecilia asked again.
"Yes," Dashiell said and nodded.
"Was Penelope's death related to you?" Cecilia pressed.
Dashiell didn't hide anything from Cecilia and recounted everything that had happened the previous night.
"So, Penelope committed suicide because of you," Cecilia concluded.
Dashiell didn't refute.
"She thought Seraphina would die with her, but you saved Seraphina," Cecilia continued.
Penelope's death was somewhat satisfying.
Dashiell might have some pity for Penelope, but Cecilia didn't.
The cruel things Penelope had done in the past were enough for her to die a hundred times over.
"How are your injuries?" Cecilia asked.
Dashiell replied, "Not too bad."
Cecilia asked, "Are you sure you don't want Seraphina to know?"
Dashiell responded, "Yeah."
"Maybe Seraphina would be touched," Cecilia suggested.
"I don't need her to be touched, nor do I want her to be," Dashiell said firmly. "Since I've already divorced her, I never thought about getting back together. I hope you can keep this a secret for me."
"Are you that disappointed in Seraphina?" Cecilia sighed.
Dashiell could have used the life-saving favor to pressure Seraphina, but he had simply let it go.
He said, "I've tried, and I don't want to try again. I don't want to burden either of us. Penelope's feelings for me made me realize how I should handle my feelings for Seraphina."
Cecilia said, "But I still think Seraphina really likes you. In the past life..."
"Cecilia," Dashiell interrupted her.
Cecilia pursed her lips, fighting the urge to play matchmaker.
She knew Dashiell had completely let go of that relationship, but she still occasionally wanted to see Dashiell and Seraphina together!
Cecilia then sighed, "Alright, I won't say more. After all, you know your feelings best."
"Okay," Dashiell responded, sounding very indifferent. He changed the subject and suddenly asked, "How's Alaric today?"
Cecilia thought for a moment and replied, "He's in good spirits."
Hearing this, Dashiell chuckled lightly and found the statement quite odd.
He said, "That's good. Please take good care of Alaric. Bye."
"Take care of yourself," Cecilia reminded him.
"Okay." With that, Dashiell hung up the phone.
As he put down his phone, the pain from his back wound made him frown.
He endured it and put on his suit jacket.
Just as he was about to leave with his car keys, he called out, "Lucy."
Lucy, who had been standing behind him, quickly responded, "Yes, Mr. Rainier. What is it?" Every time she saw his back, she felt a pang of fear.
Dashiell asked, "Can you drive?"
"I just got my license a few days ago," Lucy quickly said.
Since she only needed to cook for Dashiell every day, she had a lot of free time and a high salary. So, she decided to get her driver's license, thinking she could save up for a down payment on a car.
Dashiell said, "Drive me."
"My driving skills aren't very good," Lucy said nervously.
Dashiell responded, "Perfect for practice."
Lucy had no choice but to follow Dashiell out and drive him.
She drove very slowly, and Dashiell didn't rush her.
But it made Lucy so nervous that she broke out in a sweat.
They finally arrived at the entrance of Everhart Bank, and Lucy parked the car.
Dashiell instructed, "Drive the car back home and pick me up after work. If I work late, I'll let you know in advance."
"Okay," Lucy said and nodded.
Dashiell said, "Drive slowly. Just follow the traffic rules."
Lucy responded, "Okay."
"Remember to use the turn signal when turning. This button," Dashiell said and pointed to the button.
Lucy listened attentively.
After pointing out all of Lucy's minor driving issues, Dashiell opened the car door and got out.
As soon as he got out, he saw Seraphina standing not far away, watching them.
Before closing the car door, Dashiell reminded Lucy, "Be careful on the road."
Lucy said, "Okay."
After giving his instructions, Dashiell closed the car door and walked into Everhart Bank.
Seraphina watched Dashiell's back as he got out of the car.
From the time the sedan pulled up to when he finally stepped out, at least ten minutes had passed. During those ten minutes, he and Lucy interacted, their conversation seemed inexplicably sweet.
Seraphina chuckled lightly.
What was she even paying attention to?
