Chapter 605 Exposing Alaric (5)
"When I gotta make a decision, the first thing that pops into my head is the Royal Family of Whitaker. It's been drilled into me since I was a kid, and shaking that off ain't easy. So, I haven't done anything solid yet, but I've been keeping an eye on Pierce and watching how you two get along. I know he means a lot to you, and the way you've treated him is something he's never had before. That makes me think Pierce wouldn't hurt you unless he absolutely had to," Alaric started explaining what went down last night.
Hearing this, Cecilia looked down.
Alaric was a logical guy, so he'd judge the outcome based on reason.
She should get where he's coming from, but thinking about last night, Cecilia chose to stay quiet.
"Cecilia," Alaric called her softly. "Whether you believe it or not, when Pierce first pointed that gun at your head and demanded I reveal my identity, I knew the gun was empty. A noble family wouldn't use a woman's life to threaten someone truly valuable. Their cruelty and thirst for power mean they don't see emotions as a weakness; they only chase power and will do anything to get it. So, when Pierce threatened you last night, it was his own choice. He picked a way he thought would solve things quickly and avoid unnecessary violence. If I'm right, he did it for your sake."
Cecilia wasn't sure if Pierce really cared about her, especially since he had threatened her life. She didn't want to feel any pity for him either.
Alaric added, "And since it was his own decision, without the noble family's approval, Pierce wouldn't dare actually kill you. Even though there was some risk, I felt that when Pierce fired the first shot, I had a ninety percent chance of coming out on top."
Cecilia looked at Alaric and asked, "If I had ended up in that losing ten percent, would you have felt guilty?"
"Yes," Alaric answered.
Cecilia's eyes flickered.
Alaric continued, "At that moment, I even thought that if you died, I would commit suicide after completing my mission."
"Cecilia, I've never lied to you about anything," Alaric said firmly. "If there's something I can't disclose, I prefer to stay silent, but I would never lie to you."
Cecilia nodded silently, feeling a deep trust in Alaric. Despite what happened last night, there was a moment when she felt truly let down by him.
Alaric went on, "After that, Pierce made me fight Augustus. This was the real task the noble family gave him—to judge from my fighting whether I was from the Royal Family of Whitaker. Luckily, before I decided to join the noble family, we saw this coming. After all, they wouldn't trust someone without checking their skills. So, in my spare time, I practiced boxing with Augustus. He spent a long time studying my moves, making sure that when we actually fought, it would look to Pierce like I was at a disadvantage."
"We planned to just fake it, but in the end, the noble family still went after you," Alaric said, his face showing a hint of bloodthirsty ferocity.
Cecilia realized he was talking about Pierce's real attempt to kill her."There was no way to hide it anymore, so I had to kill Pierce, showing you my bloodthirsty and ruthless side again," Alaric said, looking at Cecilia. "Honestly, I'm scared you might push me away because of it."
Hearing this, Cecilia bit her lip.
She had pushed him away yesterday, but even then, she still held a glimmer of hope for Alaric. In the end, she chose to follow him here.
"What about your parents?" Cecilia suddenly changed the subject.
Even now, she didn't want to dive into her feelings with Alaric.
She needed some time to sort out her emotions.
"They're dead," Alaric said casually.
Cecilia looked at him, surprised. She had only seen Francis, not Alaric's biological parents, Terrence and Maeve Whitaker.
In his earlier explanation, Alaric didn't mention Terrence and Maeve's whereabouts, so Cecilia assumed they were still alive.
"Sorry," Cecilia said, feeling a bit awkward.
"It was a long time ago," Alaric said calmly. "I was probably 13, and Francis was around 9. During that time, we made some bold moves to expand our power, which caught the noble family's attention. Plus, my father's and Aunt Magnolia's deaths were never confirmed with bodies, so the noble family was always on edge. Any sign of activity could trigger a massacre. My parents sacrificed themselves to protect Francis and me, letting the noble family's blades take their lives."
He added, "When my parents died, their bodies floated on the sea for a long time. The noble family used this to their advantage, luring more members of the Royal Family of Whitaker. In pursuit of their plan, the loyalists of the Royal Family, including Aunt Magnolia and Hugo, chose to turn a blind eye, letting my parents' bodies rot and eventually sink into the depths of the sea."
Cecilia glanced at Alaric, amazed at how strong he had to be to talk about this so calmly.
"My parents' deaths eased the noble family's worries about the Royal Family of Whitaker. But recently, we've taken some ruthless actions to pave the way for my entry into their ranks, which has raised their suspicions again. The noble family never feels safe with what they've taken from others, so they stay on guard. Yet, to this day, they haven't found any evidence against us. This leaves them unsure about the existence of any descendants of the Royal Family of Whitaker," Alaric analyzed the situation. "This uncertainty works to my advantage, so I must seize the opportunity to set this plan in motion."
"But you killed Pierce. The noble family will definitely suspect you," Cecilia voiced her concern.
"Yeah, so I still need your help," Alaric said firmly.
"How?" Cecilia asked, surprised. She had always felt insignificant in their world.
"As long as the noble family believes I love you enough to kill for you, they'll believe in my innocence," Alaric said bluntly. "So, we need to act as loving as possible! Ideally..."
Hearing this, Cecilia felt Alaric had ulterior motives.
Alaric added, "If you were pregnant with my child, and I killed for you, that would be a convincing reason."
Was he so obsessed with having a child?
"Too bad you're not pregnant," Alaric sighed.
Cecilia was speechless.
The atmosphere was so serious and heavy; how had it suddenly changed? It felt like she was the one at fault!
