Chapter 498 Juliana Gets Betrayed
The family was gathered around a big table for lunch.
Emily was sitting next to Alaric, looking all timid and shy.
Cecilia was used to it.
She knew Alaric wasn't exactly warm towards Emily either.
But Juliana seemed a bit miffed.
Then she thought, 'Emily is Alaric's sister, and Alaric, who usually keeps his distance from everyone, is so patient with her. They must be close.'
From what she could see, Emily and Cecilia didn't seem to get along; otherwise, Emily would be sitting next to Cecilia instead of Alaric.
If she could get on Emily's good side, maybe it would help her get closer to Alaric.
With that in mind, Juliana quickly picked up a piece of meat and put it in Emily's plate, saying cheerfully, "Emily, it's your first time here, eat up!"
Emily looked up at Juliana, nodded politely, and said, "Thanks."
Then she lowered her head to eat the meat.
Just as she was about to take a bite, her face suddenly changed.
Juliana was a bit taken aback, asking, "What's wrong?"
"What kind of meat is this?" Emily asked.
"Rabbit meat. Our chef makes amazing rabbit dishes," Juliana said, trying to be nice.
"Rabbit?" Emily's face went pale. "Rabbits are so cute, how can you eat them!"
Juliana was stunned.
Cecilia chuckled beside her.
Emily was much more skillful.
"I don't want to eat anymore. Alaric, I don't want to eat." Emily looked really upset, clutching Alaric's hand.
Alaric felt a bit awkward.
He glanced at Theodore and Genevieve.
Genevieve quickly said, "I didn't know Emily doesn't eat rabbit meat. How about this, I'll have the kitchen make something else for her. What does Emily like?"
"She can have a bit of beef, but she mostly eats veggies," Alaric said.
At this point, he didn't want to make a fuss because of Emily.
"Okay, I'll have the kitchen whip up some beef with veggies right away."
"Mom, sorry for the trouble," Alaric said softly.
"We're all family, no need to be so formal," Genevieve said as she left the table.
Emily also pulled Alaric away from the table.
Cecilia watched them leave and then glanced at Juliana, who was genuinely a bit embarrassed at that moment.
She kept her head down, not saying a word, trying to hide her embarrassment.
After a while, the chef made a dish of boiled veggies and beef.
Just as they were about to take it to Emily in the backyard, Juliana quickly said, "Let me do it. I made Emily uncomfortable earlier, so I'll go apologize."
The chef handed the pot of beef to Juliana.
Cecilia held back her laughter, waiting for the show to unfold.
Juliana carefully carried the steaming beef soup to the backyard to find Emily.
Alaric and Emily were sitting in the gazebo in the backyard, with a small table in front of them. Juliana placed the beef soup on the small table and said to Emily, "Emily, try the beef soup."
Emily looked a bit shy and said, "Sorry for the trouble."
"No trouble at all, I just didn't know what you liked. Hurry and eat, it won't taste good if it gets cold," Juliana urged.
Emily nodded.
At that moment, she said considerately, "Alaric, you should go back and eat, you don't need to stay with me."
When Alaric heard this, he got up and went back inside.
Juliana watched him leave, lost in thought.
Emily had already picked up on Juliana's intentions towards Alaric. She was naturally perceptive, especially when it came to people interested in Alaric; she could see through them instantly. This two-faced Juliana clearly wanted to take Alaric away. One Cecilia was enough; she wouldn't allow another one.
So everything she did today was on purpose.
She smiled and said, "You're really different from Cecilia."
"What do you mean?" Juliana snapped out of her thoughts.
"Cecilia isn't as nice to me as you are," Emily said sadly.
Juliana pretended to be surprised, asking, "How could that be? Cecilia is a good person. She and Alaric have a good relationship."
"But she's really not nice to me. She knows that seeing rabbit meat makes me nauseous, but she didn't tell you. She just wanted to embarrass me," Emily complained.
"Could there be some misunderstanding?" Juliana asked.
"Of course not," Emily said firmly. "I can tell if someone is nice to me or not."
Juliana looked as if she did not know how to persuade Emily, clearly implying that she agreed with Emily's assessment of Cecilia.
"Aren't you going to eat?" Emily asked.
"I've had enough. I'll keep you company; it's boring to eat alone," Juliana said, obviously trying to please.
Emily said, "Do you want to eat some with me?"
"Sure, I'll go get some utensils," Juliana said, quickly getting up.
Seemingly unintentionally, Emily suddenly knocked over the soup.
Juliana was startled and quickly tried to move Emily's hand away.
At this moment, Emily's hand was already scalded by the soup.
"Are you okay?" Juliana asked anxiously.
Emily suddenly screamed, startling everyone in the house.
Cecilia remained calm.
But Ophelia, Theodore, and Genevieve rushed over quickly.
Alaric was neither fast nor slow.
"What happened?" Genevieve hurriedly asked.
Seeing Emily's hand turn red, she couldn't help but panic a bit.
It was Emily's first time at their house, and it wouldn't be easy to explain to the Whitaker Family!
"It hurts," Emily said tearfully, looking very pitiful.
"I had just put down the beef soup, and Emily was about to eat when she accidentally knocked it over," Juliana explained.
Before Juliana could finish her explanation, Emily said to her, "I know you don't like me, but why would you do this to me? Why would you deliberately pour the beef soup on my hand?"
Juliana's eyes widened.
She couldn't believe what she had just heard.
Why would Emily suddenly accuse her?
"Just now, Juliana came out and said I was being pretentious, that I was deliberately not eating the rabbit meat, and pretending to be soft and pitiful," Emily said with a face full of grievance. "But Alaric has always known that I don't eat rabbit meat. I've had a heart condition since I was a child and have never really interacted with outsiders. I really don't know how to get along with others. If I've done something wrong, Ophelia, Theodore, Genevieve, please don't blame me."
As she spoke, her tears flowed even more profusely.
That look even made Cecilia get goosebumps.
She glanced at Alaric.
