Chapter 26  Strolling Rumors

"Please don't be so dissolute!" Cecilia blushed slightly at Alaric's words.
He was always so flirtatious. Cecilia had heard him call someone "baby" before. She thought that she didn't mind. After all, both of them prioritized their interests.
"Are you perhaps misunderstanding the term 'dissolute'?" Alaric's voice was always so attractive to Cecilia.
She frowned.
Alaric continued with a smile, "I'll make sure you know it next time."
"Alaric." Just as he was about to hang up, Cecilia spoke up.
"What?" asked Alaric.
Cecilia said, "Don't forget about our appointment tomorrow."
"As long as Ms. Lockhart doesn't cancel, I won't either."
It felt like Alaric was making her a promise. Cecilia didn't dwell on it much and simply said, "See you tomorrow."
"See you tomorrow."
After Alaric said that, she hung up. At that moment, her phone rang again.
Her expression turned serious as she answered, "Dominic."
"Penelope just said you hit her?" Dominic questioned, his tone clearly displeased.
After Dominic finished speaking, Cecilia could still hear Penelope's voice on the other end. "Cecilia and Seraphina ganged up on me, beating me all over. Dominic, you must seek justice for me."
Cecilia coldly stated, "Dominic, after all these years together, don't you know what kind of person I am? When have you ever seen me hit someone?"
Dominic was taken aback. At that moment, he truly didn't know how to respond.
"Think about it carefully. Have I not been good enough to your sister? I've always been there for her, helping her out. If it weren't for me constantly advising Seraphina during our school days, Penelope and Seraphina would have fought hundreds of times by now. And now you come to question me. How do you expect me to answer you?" Cecilia's tone was heavy. Dominic was at a loss for words.
"If you trust Penelope more, then I have nothing more to explain. Just consider that I hit her." With that, Cecilia was about to hang up.
"Cecilia." Seeing that she was truly angry, Dominic quickly stopped her. "I didn't mean that. It's just that Penelope came back with a face full of bruises, and I felt sorry for her. I know you and I know you won’t hit Penelope."
"Dominic, it really was Cecilia who hit me, along with Seraphina. Otherwise, could I have been beaten so badly? It was her." Penelope was shouting on the other end.
"That's enough; I know Cecilia wouldn't hit you. Shut up!" Dominic scolded her.
"It really was her who hit me; it was her! How can you not believe me?" Penelope was extremely agitated on the other end.
Cecilia remained cold and said, "What she said isn't entirely wrong. I was watching aside."
Dominic was probably being driven crazy by Penelope's shouting. He walked away with the phone. "Why didn't you stop them? You know Penelope can't handle any grievances outside."
There was a hint of reproach in his tone.
Cecilia sneered as she thought in her heart, ‘Is Penelope a noble princess who couldn't bear any grievances?’
She said, "Because she said you don't like me at all and even mentioned that she will let you break up with me. She also said she will ruin our wedding next month."
Dominic was annoyed. "She was probably too angry. Don't listen to her."
"Dominic, marriage is a matter for both families. I really don't want our families to fall out because of me. I know you've always favored your sister, and I've genuinely been good to her. But clearly, she doesn't like me. If that's the case, should we just call off our wedding?"
"You're overthinking it. Penelope really likes you." Dominic hurriedly explained, "She must have been driven mad by Seraphina today to say such things. She's always told me how much she likes you and how happy she is to have you as her sister-in-law."
"But Penelope really upset me today..." said Cecilia.
"She was really provoked today. Darling, you're not someone who holds grudges. Don't think too much." Dominic comforted.
"It's probably because I care a lot about it." Cecilia didn't compromise.
Dominic also sensed Cecilia's meaning and said, "Isn't it Mrs. Lockhart's birthday tomorrow?"
"So what?" asked Cecilia.
"Tomorrow, can I have Penelope apologize to you in person?"
"If that's the case, she will dislike me even more," Cecilia expressed her concern. She didn't outright reject the proposal.
"Why would Penelope dislike you? She definitely doesn't want you to misunderstand. Don't overthink it. We're getting married in a month, don't let anything affect your mood. I heard that women with worries will get wrinkles easier, and if that happens, you won't look beautiful on our wedding day." Dominic was trying to please her.
Cecilia had been with Dominic for so many years but he had never cared about her feelings. All her kindness to him was taken for granted. She even felt he thought she was foolish and found it incredibly ironic.
‘One day, I’ll make Dominic regret and lose everything!’ thought Cecilia.
They chatted casually for a few more moments before ending the call.
Dominic's expression changed immediately after hanging up. He stormed back into the hall, his face flushed with anger.
Penelope was currently having her wounds tended to by the family doctor. Seeing Dominic return, she quickly asked, "Dominic, did you scold that wretched Cecilia? She actually sided with Seraphina to bully me. You should make her understand the consequences of bullying me and make her apologize to me in person tomorrow, or I will never forgive her."
"That's enough!" Dominic roared.
In the hall at that moment, besides Dominic, there was Octavia.
Octavia looked distressed at the wounds on Penelope.
Startled by Dominic's sudden outburst, Octavia asked, "What's wrong?"
"What's wrong? Penelope insulted Cecilia and told Cecilia I would break up with her. Cecilia is now angry with me and says she won't marry me."
"If she doesn't want to marry, then don't! With your conditions, Cecilia is not worthy of you. If you really don't want to marry her, she will beg you on her knees," said Penelope.
"Do you even know what situation our family is facing now?! The 42 million dollars from the Lockhart family is crucial. Without that, we're done for! Also, the company's stock has been plummeting. If it keeps dropping, we'll go bankrupt. We're relying on the alliance with the Lockhart family to stabilize the Kingsley family's stock market. If you ruin my wedding, do you want our family to go bankrupt?" Dominic was extremely furious.
Penelope felt very wronged by the scolding. She had always been pampered by her family and had never been scolded like this before.
"I just told Cecilia that you should go and apologize to her tomorrow, so she doesn't misunderstand your feelings toward her," Dominic stated bluntly.
"Apologize to her?" Penelope's eyes widened. From childhood, she was the only one who could bully Cecilia. Now, being asked to apologize to Cecilia, she would rather die.
