Chapter 423 Farewell to the Entertainment Industry
"You ain't earned the right to slack off yet," Hugo sneered at Cassius. "The Blackburn Family's got a venture capital firm. It's a nine-to-five gig, and you're gonna work there. I already picked out the spot for you—Director of Marketing. You start tomorrow."
"Dad, you know I hate these boring desk jobs," Cassius whined.
Not only did he get hitched young, but now he had to live like some old geezer?
"Whether you like it or not ain't my problem. If I say do it, you do it!" Hugo wasn't cutting Cassius any slack.
Cassius was about to lose it.
Hugo didn't give a damn about Cassius's feelings and kept going, "If you got a legit reason, you can come home late. But if you don't report in and get permission, and you show up late, just wait and see."
Cassius looked pissed but didn't dare to talk back.
"And another thing, Cassius, no messing around with other women from now on. If I catch you, I'll break your legs!" Hugo's face was dead serious.
Cassius felt like if he screwed up, he'd really end up with broken legs.
"That's it for now," Hugo said. "I'll let you know if I think of anything else."
'Really? There's more? Is he trying to choke the life out of me?' Cassius thought, his stomach churnning.
"Oh, right." Hugo suddenly remembered something and turned to Lily, "You're an actress, right?"
"Yes." Lily nodded quickly.
"Cancel all your gigs today and ditch your contract with your agency. Just tell me how much cash you need," Hugo ordered.
Lily had no choice but to reluctantly agree.
"Now, Cassius, go with Lily to grab her stuff and sort out her work situation," Hugo said. "I got something to discuss privately with Mr. Whitaker."
Cassius got up from the floor.
Lily quickly stood up from her chair.
They left the main hall and walked out of the Blackburn Mansion.
Sitting in the car, Cassius's bottled-up emotions exploded, and he let out a loud roar.
Cassius felt like he was gonna suffocate.
Lily watched Cassius's meltdown from the side, not daring to poke the bear, staying silent.
Cassius vented for a while before finally calming down a bit.
In the car, Lily mustered up some courage and said, "I'm sorry, Mr. Blackburn. I didn't expect things to go down like this. I really didn't think your dad would make me keep the baby and marry you."
Cassius was fuming.
He wanted to lash out at Lily but knew it wasn't really her fault.
From Lily's behavior today, it was clear she didn't do it on purpose.
She was stuck in a tough spot too.
So what reason did he have to blame her?
"I'm sorry," Lily apologized again, still getting no response from Cassius.
"It's not your fault," Cassius said coldly. "My dad always has people tailing me. It's my fault."
Because Hugo thought Cassius was unreliable, he had people keeping tabs on him.
Cassius hadn't thought too much when dealing with Lily's situation.
He never thought Hugo would actually make Lily keep the baby.
He figured someone as ambitious as Hugo wouldn't care about such petty family stuff!
If he had known Hugo was like this, Cassius wouldn't have been so reckless!
He really regretted it now.
Lily looked at Cassius's deeply regretful expression and was actually surprised he didn't blame her.
Most folks would think she set him up on purpose. I mean, who wouldn't wanna marry Cassius? She was really scared Cassius would get the wrong idea and make her life hell, but to her surprise, even though Cassius was this pissed, he didn't take it out on her.
For the first time, Lily thought maybe Cassius wasn't all that bad.
At least he didn't throw fits for no reason.
"Mr. Blackburn, I won't take that role anymore. I can't anyway. Your dad won't let me work, and I don't wanna cause you trouble," Lily said, sounding sorry.
"I already asked someone for it. If you can't act in it, just pass it to someone else. It's no skin off my nose," Cassius said, not really caring.
"Can I really give it to someone else?" Lily asked, kinda shocked.
Cassius's offhand comment was a golden ticket for small-time actors like them.
Cassius nodded.
"Okay, thanks, Mr. Blackburn. Thanks a ton," Lily said, clearly pumped.
When she got the gig, she had a good bond with Blair.
Blair's career was in a rut and going nowhere.
She had seen the role and thought it was pretty cool. Maybe it could make Blair famous. Since she couldn't take it now, she decided to give it to Blair.
She hoped Blair could hit it big soon.
She figured if Blair made it, she could help her out after she divorced Cassius.
As for Thea, Lily didn't feel any guilt.
If Thea hadn't messed with her and stolen her role, she wouldn't have gone to Cassius and be in this mess.
She was lost in thought.
After the car pulled up at her apartment, she got out.
Cassius asked, "Need a hand?"
"No, I don't have much stuff," Lily said.
"I'll have the driver go with you," Cassius insisted.
"No need, I can handle it myself," Lily quickly refused again. "I don't want others to know."
Cassius thought for a moment.
He also felt that he would eventually divorce Lily, so he agreed.
Lily went back to her apartment.
Thea was doing yoga at home, while Blair was practicing her lines.
"Enough, you don't even have a role. What's the point of practicing? It's annoying. Can't you be quiet?" Thea snapped.
Blair held back and was about to head to her room.
"Blair," Lily called her.
"Lily, you're back." Blair smiled brightly. "You went out early this morning. Did you go for an audition?"
"No," Lily pulled her into her room.
Thea watched them and sneered.
They were both useless.
They'd never make it big in this lifetime.
Inside the room, Lily said, "Blair, I'm moving out."
"Why?" Blair looked surprised.
"I might not be working in the entertainment industry for a while," Lily said.
"What happened? Didn't we agree to shine together in the entertainment industry?" Blair asked.
"Calm down," Lily reassured her. "Maybe I'll be back in a year or two."
"Don't tell me, you got a sugar daddy?" Blair guessed boldly.
"No, I'm just leaving for a while," Lily naturally wouldn't spill the truth. Trust is a rare commodity in the entertainment industry. Anyone can turn on you. "I just wanted to tell you to keep grinding in the industry."
Blair looked a bit bummed.
"Good luck!" Lily smiled.
Blair smiled back. "I'll wait for you to come back!"
Lily nodded.
She was dead set on coming back one day.
And she knew her thing with Cassius wouldn't last long!
