Chapter 442 Celebrating Being Single Again
Dashiell hit the gas and took off.
The streets were jam-packed with cars, all stop-and-go like a bad dance routine.
He looked totally unfazed.
The sunset's glow hit him, but it couldn't melt the ice around him.
He was like a stone-cold statue, no emotions at all.
Then his phone rang out of nowhere.
Dashiell glanced at it and picked up.
His voice was chill, no feelings at all, "Cassius."
"Dashiell, heard your leg's almost good to go," Cassius jumped right in.
"Right leg's all set, left one still needs some work," Dashiell replied.
"How long till the left one's good?" Cassius asked.
"Month or two," Dashiell said.
"That quick? Thought you'd be limping forever," Cassius said, no filter.
Dashiell was used to his bluntness.
"Where you at now?" Cassius asked again.
"Heading home," Dashiell said.
"Heard you..." Cassius finally said it, "got divorced."
Dashiell's face barely changed.
He asked, same calm tone, "Who told you?"
Cassius stayed quiet.
Dashiell guessed, "Cecilia?"
"Don't blame her," Cassius said, actually defending her. ""She's worried you'll be down and asked me to hang out with you."
"I'm good," Dashiell said.
"Really? Don't fake it," Cassius said, not buying it.
"Do I sound like I got issues?" Dashiell asked.
"Nope. But you've always been the tough one. Who knows what's really going on in your head. Took Alaric and me forever to figure out you liked Seraphina," Cassius griped.
Dashiell suddenly didn't know what to say.
"How about this, let's grab dinner and drinks tonight. Since Alaric's gone, I figure it's my job to make sure you don't get too down. So, let's celebrate your single life, even if you're not exactly thrilled about it."
Dashiell looked at the busy streets, feeling kinda lonely.
It was like he didn't belong in this city.
Just like a few years back when he packed up and left for another country solo.
He said, "Sure. Where we meeting?"
Cassius said, "I'll text you the spot."
Dashiell hung up, still as calm as ever.
No one could see how wrecked he was inside.
He pulled up to the place Cassius mentioned.
He walked in with a cane, and Cassius was already there.
The private room was so fancy it even surprised Dashiell.
A huge table, enough for 20 people, loaded with food.
Dashiell couldn't help but ask, "Anyone else coming?"
"Just us," Cassius said.
"Can we eat all this?" Dashiell asked.
"That's not the point," Cassius said, all excited. "The point is you finally ditched Seraphina. I'd treat you like this every day for a week if I could."
Dashiell was at a loss for words, still thinking it was over the top.
"Come on, let's dig in," Cassius urged.
Dashiell nodded, eating, drinking, and shooting the breeze with Cassius.
"I never got why you were into Seraphina. She's not ugly, sure, got some style, but she's not drop-dead gorgeous. Look at you, all classy and refined. You two were like a rich newbie and a polished aristocrat, totally mismatched," Cassius kept ragging on Seraphina.
Dashiell just listened, not saying a word.
"I'll give her this, Seraphina's got a killer body. Seen her dance at clubs, that waist and those hips... But there are tons of women with great bodies. Seraphina's just one of many. And I thought you weren't that shallow! Always figured you liked the pure type. Seraphina's just a tease!" Cassius went on.
Truth was, Seraphina was pretty old-school about relationships.
She might've seemed wild, but she was traditional deep down.
She hit the clubs for fun, never for hookups.
But now, he didn't feel the need to defend her.
'Cause they were done.
"So, splitting from Seraphina was probably the best move you've ever made," Cassius said confidently. "Let's toast to your single life."
Dashiell didn't say no.
Tonight, he kept drinking.
Even though he wasn't a big drinker, he needed the booze to numb the pain.
"But Alaric and Cecilia getting hitched surprised me. I knew Alaric had a thing for Cecilia for ages. By the way, I realized something," Cassius said, all excited.
Dashiell looked at him.
Cassius said bluntly, "Ever notice you and Alaric are way too loyal? You both can crush on someone from childhood to adulthood, no regrets. Is that a family thing? In your DNA or something?"
Dashiell smiled.
He just happened to meet someone he liked and never found another.
"I always thought Cecilia was into Alaric for his looks. I mean, Alaric's a looker, it's natural for people to fall for him. But now, their relationship is rock solid, unlike yours. I just wonder, how did Cecilia and Seraphina become friends if Seraphina's so shameless?" Cassius asked.
"You're pretty shameless too," Dashiell suddenly laughed.
Cassius was taken aback, then shot back excitedly, "I'm only shameless with women."
"Maybe Seraphina's only shameless with men," Dashiell said.
Cassius retorted, "You still talk nice about Seraphina. Haven't you moved on?"
"I have. Truly moving on means seeing someone objectively, without personal feelings. I'm just giving an objective take on Seraphina, nothing more," Dashiell explained.
Cassius thought Dashiell made sense and let it go. He said, "Dashiell, you and Alaric always look down on my lifestyle. I gotta tell you, my happiness is something you can't understand."
Dashiell chuckled, not tempted at all.
