Chapter 573 Penelope's Revenge (6) Agreeing to the Terms
In the quiet warehouse, Penelope stared at Dashiell, her eyes full of raw expectation.
Dashiell met her gaze, and they just stood there, locked in silence, until Dashiell finally said, "Okay."
Penelope blinked at him, not sure whether to laugh or cry. Dashiell would do anything for Seraphina, yet he claimed he didn't love her.
But because he was willing to sacrifice for Seraphina, Penelope could have him. With tears in her eyes, she asked, "Would you lie to me?"
"No," Dashiell replied.
Penelope believed him. Dashiell never broke his word.
She reached out, wanting to hold him. But Dashiell raised his hand slightly, avoiding her touch. "Release Seraphina first," he said.
Penelope looked at him intently. "What if you leave after I release her?"
Dashiell's expression shifted.
"I'll leave Seraphina here. In half an hour, the smuggling boat will arrive. After you and I board, I'll notify someone to come and rescue her," Penelope said clearly. "Dashiell, you have no right to negotiate if you want Seraphina to live."
Dashiell's eyes narrowed as he glanced at the black handgun in Penelope's hand. One wrong move and she might shoot Seraphina.
His throat tightened as he looked from Seraphina's terrified face to Penelope's eyes. "Okay," he said.
Penelope smiled, though it was tinged with disappointment. But she didn't care. No matter how much Dashiell loved Seraphina, it didn't matter to her.
All Penelope wanted was Dashiell. She reached out again to hold him, and this time, Dashiell allowed it.
Penelope tightly grasped his hand and put down the black handgun. "Let's go," she said.
Dashiell seemed to glance back at Seraphina.
Seraphina couldn't see or hear anything, but she felt it—the departure of the group.
The sudden departure filled Seraphina with immense fear once again.
Were they planning to kill and bury her?
The person who just came, were they here to save her or to support Penelope?
Seraphina couldn't figure it out.
Fear only made her more miserable.
She really didn't want to die.
In her prime, how could she die so inexplicably at Penelope's hands?
Tears streamed down her cheeks.
How she wished someone would come to save her.
Who could come and save her?
The iron door of the warehouse closed again.
Penelope and Dashiell walked to a hidden corner of the dock, quietly waiting for the smuggling boat to arrive.
About half an hour later, a dilapidated boat slowly approached in the distance. It had only one light, looking lonely and desolate.
Penelope, who had enjoyed wealth and luxury all her life, couldn't possibly be willing to leave like this.
Dashiell watched indifferently as the boat drew closer. When it stopped, a broken wooden plank was placed at their feet. They needed to step on it to board the boat and leave the Yakurosean Empire.
Penelope held Dashiell's hand as they walked up the plank. The two men accompanying her did not board the boat; their task was to ensure her safety, not to leave with her.
As the boat was about to set sail after retracting the plank, Dashiell suddenly broke free from Penelope's grasp and quickly moved to leave the boat.
"Dashiell!" Penelope yelled, already sensing his change of heart. She pointed the handgun at him, her voice shaking with desperation. "If you dare get off this boat, I swear I'll kill you! I'll die with you!"
Dashiell froze. The boat was slowly drifting away from the shore.
"So, you were lying to me," Penelope sneered, her eyes red with anger and hurt.
Yeah, Dashiell had been lying. He couldn't leave with Penelope. He didn't love her; he just pitied her because he knew what it was like to suffer from love. But pity wasn't love.
Penelope's persistence made him realize what his own persistence for Seraphina meant to her. It was just a burden.
Looking back at Penelope, Dashiell said, "I'm not leaving with you."
Penelope laughed bitterly. She didn't know how else to react.
"You leaving is your choice, but I am not," Dashiell said firmly. "Serenovia City is my home. I have no reason to leave with you."
"It's still for Seraphina," Penelope murmured. She had known it all along. She was the one who kept giving herself hope.
"No," Dashiell responded.
"Then why are you saving her?" Penelope asked.
"If it were you, I would save you too," Dashiell explained.
"Really?" Penelope didn't believe him. "So now, if I ask you to save me, will you?" she said harshly, pointing the handgun at her own head.
Dashiell's expression changed.
"If you leave now, I'll die right in front of you. Will you leave with me then?" Penelope pressed.
Dashiell clenched his fists. "No," he replied.
"So, this is what you mean by saving me if it were me!" Penelope's eyes blurred with tears. "Dashiell, I love you so much. What do you love about Seraphina? What makes her worth your love?" she asked.
"I save her not because I love her, but because in this situation, in your revenge against her, she is innocent," Dashiell said bluntly. "You won't let Seraphina go."
Penelope's face changed.
"Once we leave, you will kill Seraphina instead of letting someone come to rescue her," Dashiell said. "Right?"
"Yes!" Penelope admitted. Why should she let Seraphina live when her existence was a threat? As long as Seraphina was alive, Dashiell would never forget her. So Penelope wanted Seraphina dead.
No matter what Dashiell chose today, Seraphina would die. She didn't expect Dashiell to see through her plan. Yet even after figuring it out, Dashiell still played along, just to give Seraphina a few more seconds to live?
To Penelope, it didn't really matter. The worst outcome was that all three of them would die here together. She had nothing left; dying would be a relief. But it would be a pity if Seraphina died.
No matter how she calculated it, it was worth it.
Thinking of this, Penelope laughed wildly.
Dashiell's eyes narrowed. In the moment Penelope was distracted, he took a quick step forward and, before she could react, snatched the handgun from her hand.
He moved so fast that Penelope didn't even know how Dashiell did it when the handgun left her hand!
