Chapter 424 A New Character Appears

After Cassius bailed, it was just Alaric and Hugo left in the Blackburn Mansion.

"Mr. Whitaker, I heard the noble families have been all up in your business lately," Hugo said straight up.

Alaric gave a nod.

"Did they figure out who you really are?" Hugo asked.

"Nah." Alaric shook his head. "I've just got them feeling all threatened, especially Dominic."

"You had me look into Dominic before. I did, and he's definitely tight with the Monroe Family. If I'm right, Dominic's got some dirty secrets with them, and they're cutting him a lot of slack," Hugo mused. "Otherwise, with the way he's been acting, the Monroes should've ditched him ages ago. The fact that they haven't is super fishy."

"Dig deeper into his background," Alaric said bluntly.

"Got it," Hugo replied. Then he asked, "Mr. Whitaker, since you're under the microscope, should I get some folks to stick with you?"

"No need," Alaric shot down the idea. "More people around me just makes it easier to blow my cover. Don't sweat it, I know how to handle myself."

"Alright," Hugo didn't push it.

Hugo knew Alaric was always super careful with his moves.

"Haven't been to Astralton City in a minute. How's he doing?" Alaric suddenly asked.

"He's doing well. Nothing to worry about, Mr. Whitaker."

Alaric nodded.

"So when you heading to Harborvale, Mr. Whitaker?" Hugo asked.

"Day after tomorrow, crack of dawn," Alaric replied.

"Stay safe," Hugo said.

"Don't worry," Alaric responded.

"By the way, how's it going with you and Cecilia?" Hugo asked.

"Why you asking?" Alaric shot back.

"I actually think your marriage is a good move, especially since teaming up with the Lockhart Family would be a win for us. But some folks are worried you'll get too wrapped up in romance," Hugo hesitated but got it out.

Alaric chuckled, "Mr. Blackburn, you really think I'm that kind of guy?"

"No, it's just that Cassius mentioned you've been into Cecilia for years. Just curious."

"I do like Cecilia a lot, but it doesn't mess with my plans. Mr. Blackburn, no need to stress," Alaric explained seriously. "Plus, Cecilia's not that kind of woman. She'll be a big help to me."

"In that case, I'm relieved! When people ask, I'll set them straight for you, Mr. Whitaker," Hugo said.

"Thanks." Alaric nodded.

"You should stay for lunch," Hugo invited.

"Nah," Alaric declined. "I gotta visit the Whitaker Family. Wouldn't make sense to come back and not see them; don't want folks talking too much."

"Mr. Whitaker, you're always so thoughtful," Hugo praised.

"I'm heading out," Alaric stood up.

"I'll walk you out," Hugo said, starting to get up.

"No need." Alaric smiled a bit. "Before I go, congrats, Uncle Hugo."

Hugo paused.

Then he got what Alaric meant.

He shrugged, "Cassius, that little rascal, even if he gets hitched and has kids, he won't necessarily straighten up. No clue how he turned out this way, nothing like me."

"Maybe he takes after Mrs. Blackburn," Alaric said bluntly.

Hugo paused.

Then he nodded slowly, his voice heavy. "Cassius does remind me of her a lot."

"My condolences."

"It's been years. Cassius was only 2 back then," Hugo said. "I've gotten used to it."

Alaric gave a faint smile. "Take care, Mr. Blackburn. I'm out."

"Take care, Mr. Whitaker."

Alaric nodded and bounced.

Once in the car, he dialed up Cassius, "Cassius, I'm heading out."

"Where you off to? I'm almost done here," Cassius said.

"Heading to the Whitaker Mansion," Alaric replied.

"I'll swing by the Whitaker Mansion to catch up," Cassius said.

"You're about to be a dad. Chill out and take care of your wife," Alaric reminded.

"Man, it sounds like you're roasting me," Cassius grumbled.

Alaric chuckled, "Nah, I'm just jealous."

After all, Cassius was about to be a dad.

"I still think you're being sarcastic," Cassius shot back, not buying it.

Since they were kids, Cassius had never outshined Alaric in anything.

He was used to living in Alaric's shadow.

"Think what you want," Alaric shrugged it off. "I'm hanging up now."

He ended the call.

After hanging up, Alaric thought for a moment and texted Cecilia: [Cassius is gonna be a dad.]

Cecilia was in the middle of an interview.

Just as she wrapped up with one candidate, she casually checked her phone and saw Alaric's message.

So Cassius and Lily were together?

In her previous life, she didn't have much to do with Cassius and Lily, so she didn't know much about them. It was much later in this timeline that she found out Lily and Cassius had secretly tied the knot. Even now, she didn't know how they got together.

Probably a surprise pregnancy led to the wedding.

She typed back: [That was quick.]

Alaric replied: [Yeah, Cassius is two months younger than me. And he's already having a kid.]

Alaric's tone had a hint of envy.

He seemed to be hinting at something.

Honestly, if she hadn't been reborn and she was already 30 in her previous life, she wouldn't have any desire to have kids.

When Cecilia married Dominic, it was because she felt it was time to have children. It was only after she turned 28 that she started to envy others with kids.

Alaric was only 25, where did he get such a strong paternal instinct?

Cecilia didn't know how to respond to Alaric.

Then she got another message from Alaric: [Get back to work. I'm heading to the Whitaker Mansion for lunch. I'll pick you up after work.]

Cecilia replied: [Okay.]

Putting down her phone, Cecilia looked up at the next interviewee.

After the interviewee sat down, they began their self-introduction, "Hi everyone. My name is Pierce Philips, I'm 28 years old, and I graduated from Mosterwania University. During my university years, I interned at several large corporations. After graduation, I received job offers from three major companies but declined them to join Mosterwania Horizon Innovations Group. Over six years, I worked my way up from an ordinary employee to the Director of Sales and became a candidate for the leadership team. Now, due to family reasons, I have chosen to return to the country. I am applying for the position of Assistant Vice President at the Lockhart Group."

Cecilia listened closely.

She had already taken note of Pierce when she got his resume.

There were many talented applicants, but Pierce was clearly the standout.

She had high hopes for him.
