Chapter 630 Either Way, He Let Go
Seraphina and Sebastian rolled up to Everhart Bank together.
Seraphina sat in the car for what felt like forever, lost in her thoughts. Next to her, Sebastian stayed quiet, like he totally got what she was going through.
Finally, Seraphina opened the car door and stepped out.
Sebastian did the same, reaching out to grab her hand. She hesitated for a second but didn't pull away.
Hand in hand, they walked into Everhart Bank.
Seraphina watched the elevator climb up to their floor. She just stood there, not moving, until Sebastian gave her hand a gentle squeeze, letting her know they had arrived.
She pressed her lips together, glanced at Sebastian, and then stepped out of the elevator.
She headed straight to her office.
Daphne saw Seraphina coming and rushed over to greet her, but then she noticed Sebastian and the fact that Seraphina was holding his hand.
What was going on?
Wasn't Dashiell dating Seraphina?
Daphne felt too awkward to say anything.
Seraphina ignored Daphne and went straight to her desk, starting to pack her things.
Sebastian tried to help, but with only one hand free, he wasn't very fast.
They packed for what seemed like ages.
Finally, Daphne couldn't take it anymore and blurted out, "Ms. Everhart, are you quitting?"
It seemed crazy—this was the Everhart family's business. She couldn't be fired, right?
Seraphina replied, "No, I'm just changing positions."
"So soon?" Daphne was shocked.
"Yeah." Seraphina sounded totally indifferent.
"But you and Mr. Rainier..." Daphne started to say, but then she caught Sebastian's icy glare and shut up.
She didn't want to get caught in the middle of whatever was going on between him and Dashiell. She slunk back to her desk, keeping quiet, though she kept sneaking glances their way. She couldn't wrap her head around this sudden change.
Thinking about Dashiell's slight smile from last night, she felt a pang of guilt.
Seraphina kept packing.
Finally, she was done.
Movers came to help with her stuff.
Seraphina looked at her empty desk, feeling a bit lost.
Forced by Atticus to come to the company for so long, this was the first time Seraphina felt attached to a position.
Even though she complained every day and always wanted to tell Atticus she wasn't coming, this was the only job where she was almost never late and worked hard, even putting in overtime.
And she really wanted to do a good job.
She didn't know if she had gotten used to the job or to Dashiell.
Her eyes flickered as she glanced at the closed office door. She wondered if Dashiell would have a hard time accepting her sudden change.
On the phone, Dashiell had said nothing.
Because he said nothing, Seraphina felt even more unsure of how to face him now.
"Seraphina." Sebastian held her hand.
Seraphina looked at Sebastian.
"Let's go," Sebastian said.
Seraphina nodded.
She thought, 'Let's just forget about each other. There's no need to complicate things further. It's better this way.'
She followed Sebastian, ready to leave. The office door swung open suddenly.
Seraphina's heart skipped a beat.
There stood Dashiell.
He looked the same, yet somehow different.
He didn't seem defeated, still carrying that dignified and impressive aura.
But today, his outfit was different; the khaki trench coat gave him a more stylish and dashing vibe.
"Mr. Rainier." Daphne saw Dashiell and quickly stepped forward.
She was really worried about Dashiell feeling awkward.
No matter how she looked at it, Dashiell seemed like he had been left behind.
"Sebastian, come to my office," Dashiell said, turning on his heel. He didn't even glance at Seraphina or acknowledge Daphne. He just coldly summoned Sebastian into his office, showing no emotion.
Seraphina felt a sharp pain in her heart.
It was like it had been torn apart.
Seeing Dashiell's cold demeanor, she suddenly felt like her world had collapsed.
Dashiell seemed effortlessly indifferent to her. She had expected it, but deep down, she hoped he would come to terms with it soon.
But it still hurt.
It seemed like she couldn't get over it.
"Seraphina, wait for me, I'll be out in a bit," Sebastian whispered in her ear.
Seraphina nodded.
She couldn't seem to say anything.
She was afraid she would break down if she spoke.
Sebastian then walked into Dashiell's office and closed the door.
Dashiell sat in his chair, looking coldly at Sebastian.
Sebastian stood in front of Dashiell, also with a cold expression.
"How did you deceive Seraphina?" Dashiell asked bluntly.
Sebastian was a bit surprised; he didn't expect Dashiell to be so direct.
He replied, "There's no deception; Seraphina just couldn't forget me. She did develop some feelings for you, but those feelings weren't love, just a sense of novelty. Once that novelty wore off, she lost interest in you."
"Seraphina isn't that type of person," Dashiell said firmly.
Seraphina might seem emotionally fickle, but in reality, she was very simple and loyal in her feelings.
Sebastian said, "Even if she's not, Seraphina ultimately chose me. No matter the process, Seraphina came back to me in the end. Mr. Rainier, I hope you won't abuse your power to try to take her away."
Dashiell's cold face showed no emotion in response to Sebastian's deliberate provocation.
He said, "Don't worry, if Seraphina chose you, that's her choice. As for what schemes you used, that's between you two. I just want to make sure you only need Seraphina."
Sebastian's face changed slightly.
He felt there was more to Dashiell's words.
Saying that Seraphina was Sebastian's choice and that he didn't care what schemes Sebastian used—didn't Dashiell really want to win her back?
Everyone could see that Dashiell had feelings for Seraphina.
Seraphina was Atticus's only daughter and the sole heir to Everhart Bank. Being with Seraphina meant gaining Everhart Bank.
What was Dashiell's scheme?
Dashiell also saw through Sebastian's thoughts.
Sebastian couldn't understand Dashiell's actions, so he would be highly suspicious.
Dashiell wasn't lying to Sebastian.
When Seraphina chose Sebastian again, he gave up. Maybe it was disappointment, or perhaps he had become used to it. Either way, he let go.
