Chapter 379 Return to the Battlefield

Seraphina hung up and tossed the phone back to Dashiell.

She couldn't quite remember when Cecilia started getting all buddy-buddy with Dashiell.

In Seraphina's mind, Cecilia used to be just like her—totally indifferent to Dashiell.

She couldn't figure it out and honestly didn't want to waste brain cells on it.

Cecilia had changed a lot, not just with Dashiell.

Seraphina flopped onto the bed, ready to crash.

It wasn't that she was super tired; it was just that being pregnant made her feel so crappy that sleep was her only escape. So she forced herself to sleep more, and it became a habit.

"Seraphina," Dashiell suddenly called out.

She had just laid down and didn't bother to respond.

"I'm not what you think. I can do a lot, and I even have a comp..." Dashiell started.

"I want to sleep," Seraphina cut him off.

Dashiell swallowed his words.

How long would it take for Seraphina to drop her prejudices against him?

He lay down beside her, his body close, holding her.

Seraphina always had the urge to push him away because she really didn't want him so close.

But every time he got close, she would habitually accept it.

She even felt less nauseous when his big hand moved to her belly and rested on her lower abdomen.

The day after Cecilia came back, she went to work.

When she walked into the office, everyone was a bit surprised to see her.

They knew she was coming in today, but seeing her actually there was still a bit unexpected.

The whole company was buzzing with rumors that she had become a recluse after losing a project.

She bounced back in just one week?

Cecilia ignored the stares and walked straight into her office.

Rose quickly followed and greeted, "Ms. Lockhart."

"Black coffee," Cecilia paused, then said, "Actually, let's do tea today."

"Okay," Rose nodded quickly.

She felt that Cecilia didn't seem much different from usual.

Cecilia didn't seem down and out.

"Got any work to report?" Cecilia raised an eyebrow.

Rose quickly snapped back. "There's a high-level meeting at 10 AM today. Mr. Theodore Lockhart said if you were back, you should attend. If not, ."

"Remind me later," Cecilia said.

"Yes," Rose turned to leave but hesitated, asking, "Ms. Lockhart, are you okay?"

Cecilia couldn't help but chuckle.

She said, "I'm better than ever."

Was this an overreaction to the setback?

"Go on," Cecilia waved her hand.

Rose didn't dare ask more and left.

Cecilia turned to her computer and was about to dive into work.

The phone suddenly rang.

She picked it up. "Dashiell."

"I sent what you wanted to your email," Dashiell said.

"So fast?" She was pleasantly surprised.

"The Kingsley Group's firewall isn't tight," Dashiell said casually.

"Thanks," Cecilia quickly thanked him.

"You're welcome," Dashiell said softly.

Just as they were about to hang up, Cecilia suddenly said, "By the way, Dashiell, I think you shouldn't be so low-key with Seraphina."

She was thinking about Seraphina's disdain for Dashiell last night.

"I tried to tell her, but she wouldn't listen," Dashiell laughed indifferently. "Even if I told her, she might not believe it."

"So you're just gonna let Seraphina misunderstand you?" Cecilia asked.

"It's cool," Dashiell said. "If I told her that everything she has now is bought with my money and not Atticus's, she'd probably lose it. Just let it be. Seraphina's actually been accepting a lot from me lately. No need to rush things."

"I don't know what kind of good karma Seraphina racked up in her past life to land a guy like you," Cecilia said.

Dashiell laughed shyly and then said slowly, "Actually, you're just as lucky."

"What?" Cecilia didn't catch on for a moment.

"Nothing," he laughed. "I'm taking Seraphina for a prenatal checkup today. Talk to you later."

"Okay."

After hanging up, Cecilia thought about how Dashiell, knowing about Seraphina's checkup, probably got up early to handle things so they wouldn't miss it.

The more she thought about it, the more she felt Seraphina was incredibly lucky.

Then she remembered Dashiell saying she was just as lucky.

Did he mean...

Cecilia's heart skipped a beat.

She suddenly thought of Alaric.

Who would've thought that after getting back to her comfy bed, she'd be stuck with insomnia, unable to sleep?

She inexplicably missed Alaric's hard bed in Harborvale.

Cecilia snapped back to reality, forcing herself not to overthink.

She turned to her computer, logged into her email, and downloaded the files Dashiell had sent.

Then she carefully reviewed every financial expenditure of the Kingsley Group.

She saw a record of a grant to Innovation Arc, indicating Innovation Arc had already started.

Dominic must be scared of changes in the project, so he was being super proactive.

At 10 AM, Cecilia showed up at the board's meeting right on time.

Her appearance drew a lot of attention, even whispers.

Some voices were particularly loud, like they wanted her to hear.

"I thought she wouldn't come back to work. Hiding after a setback, she's not worthy of being the interim head."

"She's got no ability or intelligence. It's all just luck. Once the luck is gone, she's back to her true self."

"If it were not for her connections wouldn't be back in this position."

The noisy voices made the meeting room a bit chaotic.

Cecilia stayed cool as a cucumber.

She acted like she hadn't heard a thing.

Andrew had been watching Cecilia's expression, somewhat admiring her composure and indifference.

She could still stay so calm!

"Quiet," Theodore couldn't stand Cecilia being criticized like this.

With Theodore's word, the meeting room quieted down.

Theodore spoke directly into the conference microphone, "Today's meeting is mainly to review the company's recent financial situation. Let's start with a report from the finance department."

The CFO walked to the podium to give his report.

Everyone below listened attentively.

After all, it concerned the company's profitability and their personal income.

The CFO spent nearly an hour reporting all recent revenues and expenditures.

Overall, the trend was positive.

Most people were satisfied with the recent performance until someone raised an objection. "Improving is just an internal analysis. Our competitive edge in the market is the true measure of a company's growth."
