Chapter 574 Rescuing Seraphina
Dashiell grabbed the gun and started to leave.
"Dashiell!" Penelope screamed.
She was totally blindsided, and Dashiell had pulled it off without a hitch.
Penelope was falling apart, but Dashiell kept walking. His last words to her were, "Take care of yourself!"
That was the only bit of kindness he showed her.
Penelope watched as Dashiell jumped off the boat, her vision blurred by the pain of being left behind.
She couldn't wrap her head around why Dashiell would do this to her.
Didn't he know how much she loved him?
Penelope slowly walked to the edge of the boat.
If she were alone, she wouldn't have had a reason to keep going.
She stood on the deck, watching Dashiell swim towards the shore.
'You can't save her, Dashiell. You can't save Seraphina!' Penelope laughed, feeling a twisted sense of victory.
Even if she lost everything and died, at least she took Seraphina down with her. Whether Dashiell would die with Seraphina, Penelope didn't know.
She climbed onto the railing, her eyes locked on Dashiell in the water, a wild smile on her face. She felt like she hadn't lost. Even in death, she hadn't lost! With a splash, she plunged into the water.
Dashiell, swimming towards the shore, turned to look.
He saw the splash, quickly swallowed by the waves, like it never happened.
There were a few shouts from the boat. "Someone jumped overboard!"
But everyone on the boat was a fugitive, numb to the life and death of others.
After a few moments, the noise died down.
Dashiell swallowed hard.
He turned and swam faster towards the shore.
He had suspected Penelope might commit suicide, but that wasn't on him; it was her choice.
He had given her plenty of chances to survive, fulfilling his duty.
Dashiell finally reached the shore and rushed to the warehouse.
He shoved the door open.
Inside, Seraphina was curled up, terrified and out of it.
She had headphones on and didn't hear a thing.
In her state, she didn't even notice Dashiell had come in.
Dashiell's tension eased a bit when he saw Seraphina. He had feared finding a corpse, but she was alive.
Scared out of her mind, but alive.
Dashiell's emotions were all over the place as he wondered if he had misjudged Penelope. Did Penelope never intend to kill Seraphina? Had he thought too poorly of her?
His eyes reddened as he remembered Penelope's despairing face as she jumped into the sea. Pushing his feelings down, Dashiell walked slowly towards Seraphina.
He crouched down, and as soon as he touched her, she shuddered in fear.
Seraphina tried to speak, but no words came out.
She could only make muffled sounds.
Just as Dashiell was about to remove the cloth from Seraphina's mouth, his expression changed instantly.
He saw a timed bomb strapped to her ankle and just stared, stunned.
He had thought he had wronged Penelope.
Dashiell clenched his fists, his face twisted with rage.
Seraphina kept writhing in fear, trying to resist.
Dashiell forced himself to stay calm as he approached the bomb on Seraphina's ankle.
There were 5 minutes left.
If the bomb wasn't defused in 5 minutes, Seraphina would be blown to pieces.
Penelope was truly ruthless.
Maybe she figured Dashiell would have second thoughts, so she set this up.
If he came back and abandoned Seraphina, she would surely die. If he didn't abandon her, they would die together.
Until the last moment, Penelope was still testing how much Dashiell loved Seraphina.
Sweat dripped from Dashiell's forehead as his trembling fingers examined the bomb, trying to find the wire.
In the warehouse, a terrified Seraphina, unable to make sounds, writhed and struggled. She didn't know who was beside her; she couldn't see or hear, only felt someone near her ankle.
What was on her ankle?
After the group left, someone else came in and tied something to her ankle. With her hands bound, she couldn't touch it to find out what it was. She only knew it didn't hurt; it just felt heavy.
But what was it?
The terror in her heart prevented her from thinking positively.
Time ticked away as Dashiell identified two wires on the bomb, one red and one blue. He only needed to cut one. Dashiell gritted his teeth and took out a knife from his clothes.
Typically, the wire would be blue, but many people don't follow the rules when making bombs. So, it could be the red one.
A fifty-fifty chance, and Dashiell's calm was slipping away. He looked up at Seraphina, whose face had turned pale with fear.
At this last moment, he wondered if he should remove Seraphina's blindfold, if he should let her see him. His hand reached for her eyes but stopped in front of her. Life and death hung in the balance. Should Seraphina remember him, or forget him forever?
Seraphina suddenly froze. Just moments ago, she had been tense with fear, but now she suddenly calmed down. She tried to see the person in front of her.
She felt someone was looking at her—looking deeply at her. The sense of familiarity grew stronger. She even smelled a familiar scent.
She couldn't be sure who it was, but deep down, she believed it was Dashiell. Seraphina made muffled sounds again, trying to call out his name. But she couldn't say it.
She was so emotional that tears kept falling from her eyes, flowing down her face under the blindfold.
Dashiell's fingers gently touched her cheek. The sudden touch made Seraphina shudder; her heart seemed to be in turmoil.
