Chapter 404 Dashiell was Disappointed
Not long after, a nurse from the OR popped out and asked, "Is Seraphina's fam here?"
Dashiell's eyes flicked over. "Yeah."
"She'll be out in a sec and headed straight to her room. Hang tight."
"Got it," Dashiell replied. Then he asked, "How's she doing?"
"She got banged up a bit in the crash, but the baby didn't make it. She just had a D&C, and it went smooth. She needs to take it easy, but she should be fine," the nurse said. "Oh, and here's her surgery consent form. Keep this copy."
Dashiell took the form, noticing Seraphina's shaky handwriting.
A few minutes later, Seraphina was wheeled out.
She looked pale and groggy.
"The anesthesia will wear off soon. Let's get her to her room," the doctor and nurse said.
Dashiell nodded and followed them to the ward.
After they got Seraphina settled in bed, she stirred and woke up slowly.
When she opened her eyes, all she saw was white.
Then it hit her—she'd lost the baby.
Her eyes welled up.
The nurse next to her said, "You just had a miscarriage. Your health is the priority now. Once you recover, you can try again, so take it easy."
Seraphina bit her lip and nodded.
"Get some rest. If you need anything, hit the call button," the nurse said before leaving.
Now it was just Dashiell and Seraphina in the room.
It was super quiet.
Seraphina had seen Dashiell as soon as she woke up, sitting there all stoic and silent.
She couldn't read him at all.
She didn't even know how to bring up the fact that the baby was gone.
But Seraphina wasn't one to stay quiet for long.
She broke the silence, "Dashiell, the baby's gone."
Dashiell nodded, not looking at her, just nodding.
He already knew.
"Actually, I..." Seraphina started.
"It doesn't matter, you didn't want her anyway, right?" Dashiell said calmly.
Seraphina swallowed her words.
Dashiell said, "Get some sleep. The doc said rest is key after a miscarriage. Get some good rest."
"Do you blame me?" Seraphina couldn't help but ask.
She knew how much Dashiell had wanted this baby.
She just didn't want to admit it.
"I don't blame you." Dashiell shook his head.
He was just heartbroken.
Seeing Dashiell's indifferent look, Seraphina felt like she was suffocating.
But she couldn't let it out.
They fell silent again.
Neither of them said a word.
Who knows how much time passed when the door to the ward opened again.
Dashiell had his back to the door, but he saw Seraphina's face light up, so much that she almost sat up in bed.
She'd been keeping it together since the miscarriage, but now, she was anything but calm.
Dashiell heard Seraphina call out, "Sebastian."
Only Sebastian could really get her worked up. Dashiell moved his wheelchair aside a bit, not too far, but enough to make room.
"Sebastian, how are you? Are you hurt?" Seraphina asked, all excited.
Sebastian, looking pretty banged up, walked over and sat by her bed. "I'm fine. Why are you in the hospital? I heard from the nurse there were two car accident cases tonight. I asked around and found out it was you, so I came to see you. What happened?"
Seraphina's eyes filled with tears.
She was losing it.
"What happened? Don't cry. My injuries aren't serious. The doc said they're just superficial wounds and will heal in ten days to two weeks," Sebastian quickly explained.
"That's good. I was really scared you had a major accident. I was really scared," Seraphina's tears flowed freely.
"Don't cry. I'm really fine," Sebastian kept wiping her tears, his touch gentle and caring.
Dashiell just sat there, quietly watching their deep connection.
"How are you?" Sebastian asked. "How did you get into a car accident?"
"I got a call saying you were in a car accident, so I rushed to the hospital and accidentally hit the guardrail on the side of the road."
"Are you hurt?" Sebastian asked, full of concern.
"The doc said it's just minor injuries, nothing serious," Seraphina said softly. "But the baby is gone."
"The baby is gone?" Sebastian seemed more upset than Seraphina.
Seraphina nodded, trying to comfort him, "The doc said I'm still young, and I can have more in the future."
She didn't want anyone to see her sadness.
She feared that if she allowed herself to truly feel it, she would break down. So, she chose to lie to herself, pretending she didn't care.
"Seraphina," Sebastian hugged her tightly, as if giving her strength.
Dashiell thought the only person in this world who could truly support Seraphina might be Sebastian.
He couldn't.
He just watched them embrace, then pushed his wheelchair and left.
Sebastian noticed Dashiell leaving.
He let go of Seraphina, saying, "Wait for me a moment."
Seraphina bit her lip, just watching Sebastian chase after Dashiell.
She felt something indescribable in her heart.
She didn't even know what it was.
Sebastian called out, "Dashiell!"
Dashiell paused.
Sebastian said, "We need to talk."
"Just say what you have to say," Dashiell said, facing him while pushing his wheelchair.
"Seraphina doesn't love you," Sebastian said bluntly.
"I know," Dashiell said.
"Is it worth clinging to her like this?" Sebastian asked.
Dashiell pursed his lips and said directly, "It's not worth it."
"So why don't you leave her? You've tried now, and forcing Seraphina to be with you isn't making you happy. The person she needs is still me! She can do anything for me, but do you think she can do anything for you?" Sebastian asked.
