Chapter 315 Danger IV: Let Me Help You
After a while, Augustus released Cecilia.
Cecilia was so shocked she could barely speak, "Tom was kidnapped. Who kidnapped him? Why would anyone kidnap Tom?"
"I don't know. All I know is my duty is to protect you," Augustus said indifferently.
Cecilia gritted her teeth and tried to rush forward.
Augustus hadn't even reached out to stop her when Cassius appeared in front of her out of nowhere, "Come with me."
"Cassius, Tom was kidnapped," Cecilia said quickly and urgently. "We should help him."
"No, we shouldn't. Our priority now is to find Alaric."
"Cassius," Cecilia was getting angry.
Cassius didn't give Cecilia a chance to speak further. He had Augustus restrain her and took her back to the car, then removed his medical mask.
"Cassius, don't you think this is very strange? Why would Tom be kidnapped so blatantly?" Cecilia looked at Cassius, unable to understand his indifference.
"There's nothing strange about it. Tom knew too much, so he had to be silenced."
"What did you say?!" Cecilia was about to explode.
She thought, 'To Cassius, killing someone is that simple?'
"Augustus, wait nearby for a while. The hospital is heavily guarded right now. We'll come back later," Cassius instructed Augustus.
Augustus complied.
Cecilia couldn't hold it in any longer, "Can't we go save Tom or call the police?"
"Cecilia, haven't you figured it out yet? For such a large drug cartel to hide in a place like this for so long, do you really think it's because they're so good at hiding?" Cassius explained, his tone a bit impatient.
Cecilia was stunned, thinking, 'So Cassius means...'
"Exactly what you're thinking," Cassius confirmed.
Cecilia stared at Cassius.
She thought, 'No wonder Cassius didn't call the police and relied on himself to find Alaric.
'I've always thought it was because Cassius was afraid the police would alert the enemy, but it turned out...'
"Now you can't leave even if you want to," Cassius said. "We can't send you back right now. I need help, so Augustus has to stay. If Augustus stays, there's no one to take you back. I can't let you go alone, so you'll have to stay with us for now."
"I never said I wanted to leave, but I want you to save Tom now."
"Saving him would alert the enemy," Cassius said coldly, as if a human life meant nothing to him. "If we don't catch Jason tonight, we'll be suspected by the locals tomorrow, and we'll end up like Tom."
"Cassius, I don't know what kind of environment you grew up in, but I can't just stand by and watch someone die, especially someone close to Alaric. If Alaric finds out Tom died because of him, he won't be happy either," Cecilia pleaded.
Cassius laughed, a hint of mockery in his tone.
"Although I don't want to tarnish Alaric's name, you're really overestimating his kindness."
"If you don't save Tom, I'll call the police right now. I mean it."
"Cecilia!" Cassius's face changed. "I didn't bring you here to be a burden."
"Even if I'm being overly kind-hearted, I really can't just watch others die unless that person is Dominic." Cecilia said.
To her, those who harmed her deserved to die; she wouldn't have any sympathy.
But for innocent people, she couldn't be indifferent.
If she could be indifferent, how would she be any different from the Dominic she despised?
In her second life, she never intended to lose her humanity.
Cassius and Cecilia stared at each other for a while.
Cassius could see Cecilia's determination.
He gritted his teeth, "Head to Silvershade River."
Augustus immediately followed the order.
She didn't know what Silvershade River was.
But she felt Cassius was more familiar with this place than she had imagined.
The car followed Cassius' directions to a desolate area.
Cassius said, "Wait for me in the car."
"Cassius, where are you going?" Cecilia was a bit scared.
She felt like Cassius was about to do something dangerous.
"Getting your guy out of the river!" Cassius said and left.
Cecilia watched Cassius' figure disappear into the dark night.
Cecilia was visibly nervous, unable to hide her anxiety.
She thought, 'I might have acted impulsively just now. I wanted to save Tom, but I haven't meant for Cassius to put himself at risk.
'If something happens to Cassius, I'd probably have no choice but to atone with my life.'
Cecilia and Augustus waited in the car for half an hour.
Every minute felt like an eternity.
Then, in the distance, a figure emerged from the darkness.
Cecilia held her breath.
As the figure came into focus, she saw it was Cassius, drenched and carrying Tom on his back.
Cassius tossed Tom onto the back seat and quickly jumped into the passenger seat. "Get us out of here," he instructed Augustus.
Augustus immediately started the car.
Cecilia's attention was fixed on Tom, who was shaking uncontrollably.
He looked as though he had been drained of life and was paralyzed by fear.
"What happened to him?" Cecilia asked.
As Cassius used a towel to dry his hair, he replied, "He was tied up with stones and thrown into the river. He nearly drowned, so he's in shock."
"How did you know they'd throw him into the river?"
"It's their standard method," Cassius said matter-of-factly.
She thought, 'How on earth do they know so much?
'It is clear that they aren't new to this. It feels like it is all part of a premeditated plan.'
"In ten minutes, we're heading to the hospital to continue with our operation. As for him, I'll drop him off. I can't keep dragging him around, even if you don't understand," Cassius said firmly.
"Got it," Cecilia replied without hesitation.
Cassius seemed momentarily taken aback.
He hadn't expected Cecilia to be so unflinching.
"It's enough that we've kept him alive. Rescuing Alaric is the priority."
Cecilia had her moral boundaries, but she wasn't blind to the reality of their situation.
Turning to Tom, she said, "Tom, we've rescued you for now. They believe you're dead, so they won't be hunting you for the moment. Get yourself back to Serenovia City. Don't contact the police until we've had a chance to make arrangements."
At this point, Tom finally showed some reaction. He looked up at Cecilia, his eyes reflecting a mixture of fear and relief.
"Rely on yourself from here on," Cecilia said firmly.
Tom nodded slowly.
Augustus pulled over midway, and Tom shakily got out of the car. His body was still trembling as he left, clearly overwhelmed by the unimaginable horrors he'd just faced.
They had dropped Tom off.
Without wasting a second, the car sped towards the hospital.
As Cassius prepared to change back into his doctor's uniform, Cecilia stepped in.
"Cassius, let me help."
Cassius frowned.
"Trust me, I can help!" Cecilia's voice was resolute.
