Chapter 628 I'm Sorry for any Misunderstanding
After Dashiell had breakfast, he hopped in his car and headed to work.
Even at his age, he still felt a bit jittery.
This was a new feeling for Dashiell.
He parked in the garage, took a deep breath, and stepped out.
He walked into Everhart Bank.
Everyone couldn't help but notice Dashiell.
On one hand, he was a senior executive, so people greeted him out of habit; on the other hand, he was just so damn handsome!
Especially today.
Soon, photos of Dashiell in his khaki trench coat were making the rounds in all the departments.
Women were losing their minds.
It was just too much.
Dashiell walked into his office.
Daphne quickly approached and greeted, "Mr. Rainier."
Dashiell nodded slightly, glancing at his desk.
Seeing this, Daphne quickly said, "Ms. Everhart hasn't arrived yet. Should I call to check where she is?"
"No need," Dashiell said calmly. "Just make me a cup of coffee and bring it in, and show me the progress report."
"Got it," Daphne replied quickly.
Dashiell walked into his office, and Daphne couldn't help but smile.
Before Dashiell even arrived at the office, she had already seen his outfit on Facebook.
Seeing him in person was even better than the photos.
And it was obvious that he was different from usual.
Something must have happened between Dashiell and Seraphina last night.
Seraphina must be exhausted.
She was never late, but today she hadn't shown up yet.
From Dashiell's expression just now, it was clear he had a deep tenderness and affection for Seraphina.
Dashiell sat at his desk, working but still somewhat distracted as he sipped on a cup of coffee.
Seraphina still hadn't come to work?
If she had, wouldn't she come to his office first?
This was the first time Dashiell had been so distracted at work, even feeling on edge.
He thought for a moment, picked up the phone, and said to Daphne, "Have Seraphina come in; I have something for her to do."
"Mr. Rainier, Ms. Everhart hasn't arrived yet," Daphne said nervously.
Thinking to herself, Seraphina was really taking advantage of Dashiell's affection.
It was already ten o'clock, and she still hadn't come in.
Dashiell frowned.
Seraphina still hadn't come to work this late!
"Should I call Ms. Everhart to check?" Daphne quickly suggested.
"She was too tired last night; let her rest a bit more," Dashiell said offhandedly.
The moment he said it, he realized it sounded a bit strange.
Daphne clearly misunderstood and quickly said, "Yes, Ms. Everhart was too tired last night; let her sleep a bit more."
When did he say Seraphina was tired?
Dashiell wondered, but he chose not to say more.
He hung up the phone.
The whole morning passed, and Seraphina didn't come to work.
In the afternoon, Dashiell found himself unable to concentrate on work.
His mind was full of Seraphina.
All he could think about was her every expression and movement.
All he could think about was her, in her sexy form.
His mouth was dry, and he had drunk several cups of coffee.
Finally, he couldn't hold back any longer and called Seraphina.
He tried to sound very cold, hoping to intimidate Seraphina. When the call connected, she didn't say anything.
Dashiell asked, "It's pretty late—why haven't you come to work yet?" His tone was somewhat stern, but there was only silence on the other end as if she hadn't heard him.
Dashiell thought he had scared Seraphina. After all, they had just opened up to each other; should he be gentler?
Actually, his tone just now wasn't very severe.
Compared to how he used to talk to Seraphina, it was way softer.
And if you listened closely, you could even hear a hint of affection in his voice.
When Seraphina stayed silent, a wave of unease washed over Dashiell. He quickly softened his tone, asking, "Are you still feeling groggy?"
Still no response from the other side.
Dashiell's voice became gentle, "If you're not fully awake, sleep a bit more. It's okay if you don't come to work this afternoon; I'll pick you up for dinner after I get off work."
He was completely indulgent towards Seraphina.
"Get some sleep," Dashiell said, ready to hang up the phone.
He knew how lazy Seraphina could be.
He knew how cranky she could get if she didn't sleep well, so he didn't think much of it.
Anyway, with Seraphina, he was prepared to compromise on everything.
"Dashiell," Seraphina suddenly called him.
Her voice seemed a bit cold.
Dashiell frowned slightly.
He noticed something off in Seraphina's voice but brushed it aside.
"Is something bothering you?" Dashiell asked, keeping his tone gentle.
"About last night..." Seraphina paused.
Dashiell's lips curled into an unmistakable smile.
What wasn't finished last night could be continued tonight.
"Forget it," Seraphina suddenly said.
Dashiell's hand holding the phone suddenly froze.
His throat moved slightly.
The smile on his face seemed to stiffen instantly.
He thought he must have misheard.
"I'm sorry for any misunderstanding," Seraphina said flatly, her tone still noticeably cold.
Dashiell's emotions were clearly a bit frayed, but he fought to keep his cool. His voice remained gentle as he asked, "Are you still not fully awake?"
"I'm wide awake now," Seraphina clarified, enunciating each word. "I'm fully awake, so I know exactly what I mean. Also, I've told my dad that I won't be your assistant anymore. I'll be transferring to the corporate client department as an assistant manager, which means I'll be working for Sebastian."
Hearing this, Dashiell just held the phone.
Seraphina's indifferent words conveyed a lot of information.
So everything last night was a dream.
All his expectations for Seraphina and their future today were just fantasies, right?
He held the phone, suddenly unable to say a word.
"I'll come to pack up my office in half an hour," Seraphina said coldly.
Dashiell smiled faintly, choosing not to ask anything more. He hung up the phone, feeling the weight of realization. In the end, he had still been abandoned by Seraphina, and it dawned on him that it had all been just his wishful thinking from the very beginning.
The call ended, and Seraphina's tears began to fall uncontrollably. No one would ever know how much it hurt her to say such heartless words during Dashiell's call just moments ago.
"Seraphina," Sebastian called her from behind.
Seraphina discreetly wiped her tears.
Sebastian could tell she had been crying, but he pretended not to notice.
He had gotten back together with Seraphina, using cruel methods to force her into a relationship. Last night, he had made a deliberate attempt to take his own life, leaving eight stitches on his wrist and the house drenched in blood. When he called Seraphina to say goodbye, she had been terrified. From 3 a.m. until now, they had been at the hospital, and Seraphina was compelled to return to Sebastian's side.
