Chapter 615 A Crisis
Under the night sky, Cecilia watched nervously as Alaric walked towards the sketchy black sedan. Her heart was pounding.
She saw a guy in a black suit open the car door for Alaric with a lot of respect.
Alaric got in.
Cecilia's heart was racing as she watched the car drive away, taking Alaric out of her sight.
Feeling a bit lost, both Cecilia and Augustus didn't know what to do. Without Alaric's orders, Augustus didn't dare to make a move, and neither did Cecilia.
Afraid that any small action might mess up Alaric's plan, she waited anxiously in the car. Every second felt like an eternity.
Finally, the black sedan came back, and Alaric got out and returned to Cecilia's side. She couldn't help but stare at him.
Alaric seemed fine and, after getting into the car, told Augustus to drive away.
But Cecilia felt like something big must have happened.
Otherwise, why would Gideon take Alaric to Serenovia City like that and then bring him back the same way?
The car was super quiet.
Cecilia held back her questions, feeling like she was sitting on pins and needles.
"Gideon wants me to infiltrate the Monroe Mansion," Alaric suddenly said, probably noticing her tension.
His tone was super calm, like he didn't have any emotions about it.
Cecilia looked at Alaric and asked, "He wants you to go to the Monroe Mansion?"
"Did Lyra approach you?" Alaric asked.
"Yeah. When Dominic was sentenced, Lyra tried to recruit me, but I said no. It wasn't just because of my deal with Gideon; I also thought it was best for us to stay neutral and see how things played out," Cecilia shared her thoughts.
Alaric nodded, agreeing with her. He said, "But Gideon found out the Monroe family was trying to recruit us, so he wants me to use that and become a spy for them."
"I just turned down Lyra, so suddenly being nice now would definitely make them suspicious," Cecilia said honestly.
People from noble families weren't easily fooled.
When they knew a lot of internal conflicts were about to happen, they got really cautious.
"So you don't need to get involved with the two major noble families," Alaric said. "I'll be the one to join the Monroe family."
Cecilia frowned.
What did Alaric mean?
"This was the deal I made with Gideon," Alaric explained. "I can be used by him because he saved my life, but I won't let you get dragged into their conflict."
"He agreed?" Cecilia was surprised.
Given Gideon's nature, he would want to use people to the fullest extent.
Would he really let go of the Lockhart family's vast assets?
Alaric replied, "There are two reasons. First, you did refuse Lyra. If you suddenly agreed to join the Monroe family, they would definitely be suspicious of both you and me. So you have to keep your stance of not supporting any side. But we are two individuals, and even within a marriage, a man's ambitions and a woman's can differ. Just because you stay neutral doesn't mean I can't be recruited. If the Monroe family can't get you, they might approach me separately. As long as I agree without your knowledge, they probably wouldn't be too suspicious."Cecilia nodded, thinking Alaric had really thought this through.
If he hadn't, Gideon wouldn't have trusted him.
Alaric continued, "Second, I made it clear to Gideon how much I care about you, letting him know I'd do anything for you. This way, if he wants to use me, he has to agree to my condition, and he won't suspect Pierce's death."
At this, Cecilia was about to ask if Gideon didn't suspect Alaric's identity.
Pierce's death would naturally raise some eyebrows.
Wouldn't someone as cautious as Gideon be suspicious of Alaric?
"I confessed to Gideon about Pierce's death, saying I had Augustus kill him," Alaric said. "Augustus was part of the original Phantom Sentinel Agency, so it's believable he could take out Pierce. Plus, Pierce was always under surveillance. Any slight change in his behavior was known to the noble families. So, Pierce's reluctance to kill you, leading to his own death, can be reasonably explained."
Cecilia nodded.
It seemed Alaric had thought everything through.
If Gideon asked, he could answer effortlessly.
"But even with all this, Gideon's trust in me is only on the surface," Alaric chuckled.
Cecilia frowned slightly and asked, "What do you mean?"
"Gideon is still testing me," Alaric said to Cecilia. "By having me join the Monroe family, he's essentially passing the danger onto them. If I prove trustworthy, I could harm the Monroe family; if not, I won't pose any threat to him at the Monroe Mansion. Gideon's schemes, along with the Hotchner family's years of calculated patience and concessions, all serve a purpose."
"Politicians—none of them are good people!" Cecilia exclaimed, unable to hold back her frustration.
Alaric's expression faltered for a moment, and Cecilia realized that he, like Francis, was also a politician. With a hint of amusement, she laughed and said, "I was only referring to the two major noble families."
"No, it's everyone," Alaric replied to Cecilia. "None of us are truly good people. We'll do whatever it takes to achieve our goals."
Cecilia said, "I know you're forced into this."
"But I've also stained my hands with many people's blood," Alaric said, looking directly at Cecilia. "I promise you, once this is all over, I'll step back completely and have nothing more to do with politics."
"Okay." Cecilia nodded emphatically. "Then we'll have lots of kids and live a simple, happy life!"
"Lots of kids!" Alaric laughed, a warm smile spreading across his face.
Cecilia felt a bit shy.
She had been charmed by Alaric and accidentally voiced her inner thoughts.
Cecilia quickly changed the subject. "So, has Gideon given you any tasks now? Are you preparing to return to the State Office?"
"I start at the State Office tomorrow. That's actually why I came back today; they notified me to start tomorrow. Once I start, I'll follow the rules, wait for the Monroe family to recruit me, and then be used by both major noble families, ultimately taking them all down." Alaric deliberately made it sound easy.
But deep down, Cecilia knew that from now on, it would be another crisis!
